Last week, we uncovered evidence that Verizon might be working on a new phone system that could combine your home and mobile phones into one number. It sounded interesting, but we were more taken aback when we realized we didn’t even consider just how widespread home phone service is still used.
Most people I know use their mobile phones as their home phones. It’s convenient, and they can carry it with them. They can also use it to send text messages when they don’t feel like talking, or surf the web, play games, and use the billions of apps available.
Despite those advantages, companies like AT&T and Verizon are still placing great emphasis on home phone service, with the companies offering discounts when bundling the service with other subscriptions like cable and home internet.
We took a quick poll around the Phandroid office to see how common home phone usage is in our ranks. Of around 10 people polled (myself included), only 3 still have home phone service, and those who have it either don’t use it (as it comes with their cable and internet package) or only use it for very specific reasons.
So, we’re curious: do you still own a home phone? If you do, do you use it? And why? If you don’t use it, why do you still have it? And would you ever consider going the mobile-only route? We want to hear it all, so be sure to participate in the poll below, and don’t feel afraid to expand on your particular situation in the comments section!
