LG has just announced that they’ve claimed title of first manufacturer to deliver Android 5.0 Lollipop to the masses. The upgrade is headed to owners of their flagship Android phone LG G3 in Poland starting this week. LG didn’t have any news to share for other countries or regions, though we imagine they won’t be taking long to get the rollout going for folks in other parts of the world.

LG says they’re also planning to bring the upgrade to other LG smartphones at some point soon. We know the company is planning to deliver the goods to owners of last year’s LG G2, though a timeline isn’t immediately available.

“LG is absolutely committed to giving our customers the best mobile experiences available and bringing Android Lollipop to G3 owners as soon as possible is a top priority,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The new features and improvements in Android 5.0 will bring a whole new user experience to the G3 and make it even better than it already is.”

Early leaked screenshots of Lollipop on the LG G3 didn’t show us much, but LG has seemingly stuck to their tried-and-true user interface sitting on top of the sweet treat. Notable changes in that leak were newly-styled notifications and a profile photo in the upper right corner of the notification pane. There wasn’t much else new compared to LG’s KitKat design, though it’s still unclear if that leaked screenshot was from an early build. We’ll be looking to track down the changelog for LG’s official Lollipop upgrade in the moments to come.

This breakneck pace of upgrades by Android’s prominent device manufacturers signals a huge shift in focus for the industry. Just a couple of years ago you’d be hard-pressed to hear anything about the latest versions of Android for your device for months at a time, but companies are beginning to note the importance of timely and frequent upgrades when it comes to developing a loyal consumer base.

Just this past week, Motorola began delivering Lollipop to Moto X soak test members for an eventual wide scale rollout (and if we know anything about soak tests, it’s that it doesn’t take long for Motorola to push the green light for a seemingly stable kit of firmware). Sony has also started teasing Lollipop on their Xperia Z devices, though the company hasn’t yet shared any detailed rollout schedules. NVIDIA promised the upgrade by the end of November for their SHIELD Tablet, while HTC committed to having the upgrade out within 90 days for the HTC One M7 and HTC One M8.

We hope this is a good sign that OEMs have finally realized just how important these upgrades are to users, and that they will look to have this attitude for many more versions of Android (even minor ones) going forward.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. That’s because they copied and pasted everything they did in kitkat!

    1. As a programmer I can tell you copy and paste is not your friend.

  2. The Nexus communities are not the place to be right now.. Lol

    1. I wouldn’t say that. Nexus devices don’t have horrible UIs (sorry, my opinion), gimmicky features you won’t use after a week (another opinion), and don’t come loaded with carrier bloat. The Moto X only received a soak test. And LG just made an announcement that OTAs will be out this week. I believe OTAs from Google will hit Nexus devices this week too.

      1. It is still Saturday, did you mean next week :p

      2. No no no. You misunderstood me lol. Nexus communities like on Google+ where you see nothing but meme’s and angry gifs everywhere about how mad nexus owners are about the lack of lollipop they are receiving. I love Nexus devices :)

This is basically the Nexus community on Google+ in one gif http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view5/4067268/waiting-kitchen-scene-o.gif

        1. Haha, yeah… they’re not impressed :)

        2. LOL this sums up the Nexus community perfectly right now. Hell the Moto X 2014 will probably beat my N5 getting Android 5.0 I just wonder what is going to happen first, my N5 getting 5.0 or receiving my N6? I guess the N6 won’t be the first phone with lollipop on it lol

      3. I honestly preferred LG’s G3 UI to the Nexus 5’s (who knows after the update) (I have it installed on my G2, where I’ve conveniently removed a few pre-installed features and apps) but overall I like the look, feel, added customizability and functionality compared to stock. I’m not too particular about getting it updated, as long as I get better battery life and performance and it’s completely bug free. I couldn’t stand updating only to have to revert back due to bugs -_- lol

    2. At this rate my old Motorola Milestone will be running Android 5.0 before my poor Nexus 5!

  3. Good the phone then my nvidia tablet also not bad not bad at all

  4. The fact that these phone makers are making it a race to put out updates makes me happy

    1. Seriously. The race is on, and two manufacturers could actually beat Google! That’s crazy.

I’m still patiently waiting with my Nexus 5. :)

  5. Why Poland? Good for them though.

    1. The carriers don’t test or verify software. They’re generally first for everything as far as Android updates go.

  6. So the Nexus price went up… AND the nexus line is no longer first to receive updates?

    1. Yeah, I’m confused.. is the LG G3 going to get OTA’s before my Nexus 5?

      1. Nexus 5 had a last-minute bug related to WiFi and battery.

    2. @VI This is not official version. Both Motorola and LG has not released official version. So there is no guarantee that Lollipop roms would be released before Nexus 5.

  7. Impressive

  8. Part of me is for this and another part of me is upset. One reason I switched to Nexus was because manufacturers were not putting out updates quick enough for my liking and the other was because of the skins that some of the manufacturers put on their devices. One perk though still having a Nexus device is that I am more likely to get Android 5.5 or even say they release 6.0 next year.

    1. 6.0 next year??? More like 3yrs from now.

  9. Let’s move to f&&king Poland. Lol

    1. I live in f..king Poland xD

      1. That’s awesome. Hope you have a G3. One day I would love to visit Poland.

        1. I’ve got the Nexus 4. I have to wait 3 days for the Lollipop factory image :/

  10. Good, hopefully that means our G3’s are on track to get it sooner, rather than later…

  11. As a S3 owner, I’m patiently waiting for D2LTE CM12 and all the other roms that will follow. Hopefully they won’t be as buggy as the KitKat roms.

    1. They said that the first nightlies are expected around newyear.

    2. I am with you. Fortunately, XDA custom ROMS come out in 2-3 months of AOSP release but takes way long to stabilize.

  12. Hopefully the updated Lollipop G3 ROM will run on the G2. I’m running the current G3 KitKat UI on my G2 now so I’m hopeful it’ll just port right over.

  13. Fantastic news! I expected to wait until March for this. LG has outdone themselves on the g3, faster update than the Nexus line is what dreams are made of! Kudos LG, Kudos!

  14. Guys will i get android lollipop on lg g pro 2????pls reply

    1. If it was released less than about 18 months ago then it’s a pretty good bet that you’ll get it.

  15. If they’re this fast for the G3, it shouldn’t be too long for the G2

  16. Seems LG has just nullified one the points of owning a Nexus device.

    1. The Nexus fanboys cant talk anymore

      1. Is this really a thing?

        1. Yes, it is… Nexus fanboys are almost as vocal and full of rage as apple fanboys.

          1. Cuz only Nexus smartphones are faster than the iPhones.

    2. If you live in Poland, yes!

    3. Nexus still gets my favorite look of android. Being naked and vanilla ☺

  17. LG, what about older but capable smartphones like Optimus G e970 ? LG, you skipped Kitkat update saving money for yourself so be nice to millions of customers owning optimus G to update with lollipop 5.0. Otherwise, my next upgrade of phone will be something other than LG.

  18. Where are the people bashing LG for their slow updates now?

  19. Poland? Seriously. They pick Poland first… Ummm okay :)

  20. Pushing Lollipop to Poland some time this week is hardly “delivering Lollipop to the masses.” There are probably more people with it right now, participating in the Moto X soak test, than there are LG G 3 owners in Poland.

  21. WOW LG.. sure surprised me!
    btw – Glad I have a G3!! lol!
any love for the LG G Pad??

  22. Wt about lg g pro 2?

  23. When is my LG P500 (Optimus One) getting Lollipop?

    1. For the life of me I can’t find it or I would just link it to you, but I came across a chart with all of the applicable phones for updates and their rollout dates (~). Google can show you I’m sure. LG will probably finish rolling out by the end of the year/beginning of next year.

    2. Seriously?

  24. It’d be by mice of LG lighter lightened their skin and at least made the notification panel naked. Oh and use lollipop software keys since no xposed for 5.0 yet… Guessing not though especially this year.

    1. Sometime, somewhere, it will be okay. I promise.
