Write for Phandroid: we’re seeking contributors!

37

The wild ride on the mobile tech market continues and despite having a very competent team of authors and editors, we’re always looking to bring new talent and perspectives to our team and ultimately, to our readers. As we approach a new year – one that we’re highly anticipating to be our best yet – we’re hoping some of you can help make that happen.

That’s right… we want YOU to be on our team. The tech community is filled with passionate, educated enthusiasts with loads of insight and knowledge to share. Think you got what it takes? Consider this your invitation to apply as a Contributing Author on the Phandroid team.

What positions are we seeking?

News Reporters
Android news is unrelenting; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We’re looking for folks who live and breathe mobile tech news. If scanning RSS feeds, swimming through sub reddits, monitoring social media, and digging around the deepest depths of the interwebz is on your daily agenda, than you know what we mean. If taking this news, analyzing it, explaining it, and providing your opinion sounds like fun… you might just be the right fit.

App & Game Reviewers
Are you constantly in search for the latest apps and games to land on the Google Play Store? Do you download and test so many new .apks that your app drawer is deeper than the Library of Congress? Continually giving unsolicited app and game suggestions and opinions to family and friends? Bring your insight to the masses as an Android App and/or Game Reviewer for Phandroid! Video capabilities and experience are a plus (but not required)!

International, European & Weekend Tech Bloggers
All of our current staff reside in the United States. Our audience is global. That presents a considerable problem when, you know, we’ve got to sleep. And we might be geeks, but we’ve got computer games to play things to do on the weekend, too. We’re looking for general tech bloggers who are eager to contribute on a wide variety of topics, who also happen to have availability that fills our gaps. We could really use your help!

What is a Contributing Author?

The contributor position is an unpaid position, but does have some perks. It provides a great opportunity to be published on a reputable news source. It’s a resume builder, opportunity to “get your name out there”, and allows you to engage in an open dialogue with a vibrant tech-loving community. At times we’ll have advanced access to apps and games, accessories to test, new phones/tablets/hardware to review, to which contributors may have access (among other things).

What are the expectations of a Contributing Author?

Contributing Authors will be expected to publish a minimum of 1-3 articles each week. They’ll communicate closely with the editorial team via E-Mail, Skype, and other means, passing back and forth story ideas that could be either time sensitive or open ended.

Maybe you already spend your time digging through tech sites and social media and would love to bring the information to our readers with your own spin. Maybe you’ve always wanted to create videos, write tutorial articles, or compose full blown reviews of the newest apps and games. We’re looking for a diverse set of contributors who can help take Phandroid to the next level.

How can you apply?

  • Send an E-Mail to rob[at]phandroid[dot]com
  • Copy and paste “Phandroid Contributing Author” in the subject line… without the quotes
  • Tell us your name, age, location and a little bit about yourself
  • Tell us which of the 3 positions most interests you
  • Tell us why you would make a great Contributing Author
  • Tell us how much time each week you hope to dedicate to Phandroid (be realistic!) and what type of content you would most like to contribute
  • Copy/Paste/Link us (no attachments) to related writing samples in the Phandroid style (optional)
  • Give us an idea of what you’ll bring to the table by sharing a few unique article ideas you would enjoy writing
  • Convince us that you’re the “go-getter” we’re seeking!

TAKE YOUR TIME
We’re looking for quality applicants, not how quickly you can show your interest/urgency. We’re expecting a large number of inquiries and will be unable to respond to every person. If we’re interested, expect to hear back from us in about a week, at which point we’ll narrow down the field of candidates with some follow up questions.

So… whaddaya say?

  1. Nice! I will apply. Would love to do something like this. I am a recognized contributor and developer over at XDA and been wanting to help out one of my favorite sites if I am accepted.

    1. Can confirm. Guy think he knows what he’s talking about :P

      1. Haha…long time no talk :)

        1. I know, right! You still playing with sources and ROMs?

          1. Yes just got back into for the G2 and G Pad 8.3

    2. I’ve seen u on the G2 section I think… I remember the username.

  2. I’d love to apply, but I just don’t have the bandwidth right now. Good luck in your search!

    1. Besides, I already ripped you guys about your dress code on camera, I don’t imagine you’d want to revisit that every week ;)

      1. Man, you got that right!

  3. How about a proof-reader?

    1. If the writer is good enough to join the ranks, why get a proof-reader? A blog is a fluid platform after all, us reading posts and pointing out grammatical flaws is a much faster process than having a filter delaying posts. It’s the internet after all, speed is essential!

      1. Most editing is done after an article is published.

      2. Especially when the guys report from a trip. This is not a Washington Post, calm down!

      3. If a writer is good enough, we don’t need to point the flaws out, they’d catch them on their own. Hard to take a blog seriously with half a dozen spelling or grammar errors in an article.

  4. Thanks for this opportunity! I’ll make sure I forward something tomorrow!

  5. Do you guys give out assignments like “Hey check and write about what you think? kind of thing. Or is it more of an expected thing? where you go out and write about what you want.

  6. Well — I’m applying.

  7. how much does it pay? Can u give me an advance for 6 months?

  8. Oh, me, me!

    1. I wish, miss you at PS4daily.

      1. Aww. Miss you too! LOL!

        1. So what is your take on the PS4? I wanted your final verdict lol I didn’t really see the answer to that at your “new place”.

          1. Kinda off topic. That’s a good point. Might have to put something together to lay that notion to rest. Final verdict would place it at an 8.0/10.0. It’s a powerful piece of tech with a strong release and an even stronger future. Plenty of awesome under the hood and plenty of room for improvements, especially on the side of Twitch allowing archived PS4 streams.

  9. Edgar, have you ever been told that you look like a chubby Jesus? :-P

    1. YEAH! lol. They also call me gnome, Gimli, Sasquatch and Viking. Hahaha!

      1. Chubby Jesus is so much nicer though!

        1. Yeah but Viking is pretty badass too. lol

  10. I like you guys, you’re diverse.

  11. doesn’t raveesh live in India?

    1. Yes I do, but I can’t cover the weekdays

  12. Make a contract for the lucky ine to never ever ever write a iphone post ever. We have lost too many

  13. Why is Quentyn never with you guys at the social events? How come he didn’t get a pair of Google-glass?

Quentyn used to infuriate me by constantly drawing parallels between the AOS & IOS. I can start reading an article and by the 2nd sentence I know if Quentyn wrote it or not- his style of writing gets a little old, but…. He contributes a lot of articles to Phandroid and his dedication is definitely there. One of my favorite articles was written by him. I can’t believe your staff writers are expected to contribute this much with ZERO compensation. I wish I had the free time to contribute, actually I do have the free time, but choose to do other things with it. Good luck!

    1. Ha, I used to travel a lot back in 2010 and 2011, but personal issues have kept me from traveling as much as I’d like in recent years.

Truth be told, I legitimately used to think Google borrowed a lot of ideas from iOS, but they’ve obviously come into their own since the early years, and it’s hard to say they are copying anyone at this point. All I’ve seen out of Mountain View in recent months and the past couple of years is pure innovation.

Believe you me: contributors are definitely NOT expected to produce as much as I do without pay. I’m actually doing this on a full-time, paid scale.

Just curious: which of my articles was your favorite? I know my writing style can be a bit on the “familiar” and “dry” side, but I try to provide consistent commentary on a day-to-day basis. Interested in hearing your thoughts!

      1. I know which one it is I think.

  14. You know what this place needs? A female/geek/wordsmith full of repartee and sarcasm. My consists of quick wit strewn about the internet and a day job as a network engineer. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany….except I have a house, which I’ve been reminded of every. single.day. this. week… with snow. Ugh.

  15. Huh?

  16. I’M Assuming all the positions are unpaid?? Lol
