Google is thinking about letting you change the “OK Google” hotword for Google Home

Saying me and the “OK Google” hotword have had a love/hate relationship over the years is putting it a little too balanced. We’ve had more of a “slightly tolerable but mostly annoying and wishing like hell I can switch you out for something else” relationship.

Imagine my delight, then, when I heard Google was considering giving us the ability to change the long-used hotword for waking up the Google Assistant and Google Home. That much was revealed to The Verge by Rishi Chandra, VP of Google Home.

While Chandra wasn’t keen on saying anything definitively, he says the company is looking closely at feedback and carefully considering not only whether it’s the right move, but also how to go about it. They don’t know if they’d want to introduce a new static hotword that’s easier to say, or let users change it to whatever they want. We’d obviously prefer the latter.
