New Sony Xperia SP rumors swirl in

19

Ready for yet another rumor regarding yet another Sony device that was named by picking random letters from the alphabet? The latest bit comes from XperiaBlog, and the outlet has apparently gotten word about the Sony Xperia SP (or the C530X, as it was once called). According to a “trusted” source of theirs, The SP will feature a 1.7Ghz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, Adreno 320 graphics, and possibly a 4.6 inch 720p HD display.

The phone will also feature Sony’s 8 megapixel Exmor camera sensor, 8GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, and will sport an aluminum construction with the only exception to that being the back plate (said to be plastic). It doesn’t sound like something Sony’s going to be touting as the next big thing, but it could be a very solid offering for those who don’t need to biggest and baddest smartphone on the planet.

We’re not sure when to expect Sony’s next round of wares but the company has a history of surprising us with a few things at Mobile World Congress. We’ll have to wait and see if there’s anything in-store for us once we make our way to Barcelona next week.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. So a HTC Evo LTE with GSM capabilities?

  2. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sony phone in the wild.

    1. They’re tough to catch. You have to use an Ultra Ball, at the very least.

  3. It that the power button from Xperia Z on the side there? Looking good there, mate. Really liking this desgin language thing.

  4. It’s really awesome that 720p is finally becoming a standard for phones now. :D

    1. I think you mean 1080p? O_o

      1. No he meant 720p for low, mid, and high end devices…usually flagship phones come at 1080p…at least for now…..

        1. Flagship is high end. And 1080p will quickly become the standard for mid then low end devices too, huzzah!

  5. “…named by picking random letters from the alphabet”.
That’s how all stupid (and therefore struggling) companies work.

They copy without understanding what exactly they’re copying:
HTC One X/S/V, SONY Xperia T/P/TL/ZL, Huawei P2, ZTE Nubia Z5/6/7, BB Z10/Q10…..etc.

    SAMSUNG’s “Galaxy S” = Galaxy S(piral) = Galaxy SAMSUNG.
“S” is NOT a random letter chosen by SAMSUNG.
    It’s SAMSUNG itself.

    S for SAMSUNG.
    S = SAMSUNG.
    S.

If WOW Motorola XPHONE will have as hi-end design as Chromebook Pixel has, be wow, be big enough and made in USA (as NEXUS Q and Pixel are), we have 3 superdevices for 2013: XPHONE, NOTEIII, GSIV.

    Android FOREVER.

    1. Where did you dream up that S=Spiral/Samsung reference? The Galaxy S (or Z, SL, Z, R, X, W, M or Y) is just as random as any other manufacturers name.

      1. Given that the S was the original, it could be true. Maybe they decided to copy the stupid letter trend with their devices they knew wouldn’t be top sellers later on.

        1. Except that the Samsung Galaxy S wasnt the first Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

They had atleast 2 smartphones with the Galaxy name before the S.

The S is just a letter nothing more nothing less.

          1. There was only one phone that was just called “Galaxy” which was the first one. The Second phone had three names, likely due to it being offered on more than one carrier. “spica” was one of the names, so its likely the “S” is an abbreviation for that. They didn’t give the Galaxy the “S” branding until they released the first Galaxy S (with a different name for each) across all the major U.S. carriers. Which was a bad decision in my opinion. Each one should have just been Galaxy S.

Like I said its possible, I never said it was right.

    2. Samsung Galaxy S(amsung) 3? even stupider.

  6. I really hope Sony brings something amazing with the rumored phablet device, love what they did with the Xperia Z. If they were to add the build quality of the Xperia Z with the edge to edge design of the front panel on the Zl + a S600-S800 chip, I would have a real hard time not buying it. Plus they have brought a whole wide range of new NFC enabled home media devices that are pretty cool.

  7. Next phone from Sony will be name Xperia abcdefg! ridicules with these names so confusing.

  8. If this sounds too good to be true, just wait a minute Sony to prove it is.

  9. If your phone naming scheme doesn’t make it clear which phone is better than which, you are doing it wrong. This is one thing Apple gets right, albeit with the help of a very limit range of products.

    1. Actually, Apple have messed up the iPad names haven’t they? It was the iPad, then the iPad 2 then the iPad (again) and now I’ve no idea what the revised version of the third iPad, that is just called the iPad, is called … see? Clear as mud!
