The OnePlus 8 has received its final update

0

When it comes to Android updates for phones, most phones usually receive 2-3 years of major OS updates and up to five years of security updates. If you own the OnePlus 8 or 8 Pro, then you might be interested to learn that the handset has received its final update in the form of OxygenOS 13.1.0.587.

This is according to an announcement on the OnePlus Community page. A member of the OnePlus software team has announced the rollout of the update. They note that for now, it has started to rollout only in India, but presumably it should reach other regions eventually. They also point out that with this update, it will be the final update for the OnePlus 8 series.

Keep in mind that this is the end of OnePlus’ obligation to its OnePlus 8 customers in terms of software updates. But we have seen instances in the past where phones no longer eligible for updates still receive emergency patches every now and then. Presumably this is due to glaring security issues and vulnerabilities, but don’t expect new features.

In the meantime, we’ve started to see more companies increase the length of support. For instance, Google says that the Pixel 8 phones will receive 7 years of updates. OnePlus did change their policy starting with the OnePlus 12, but we’re not sure if they plan to match Google’s.
