EIS, Project Treble, and “tap to wake” is coming to the Essential Phone in the near future

0

The last few weeks have been rather odd for Essential, as Andy Rubin abruptly took a leave of absence before quietly returning. Then, we saw reports that Essential has “only” sold 50,000 units, based on the download numbers of the company’s Camera app in the Play Store.

Last night, Essential held its latest AMA on Reddit where some upcoming features for the Essential Phone were revealed. Perhaps the biggest addition coming to the Essential Phone will be Electronic Image Stabilization for both videos and images. The company confirmed that EIS is on the way, but stopped short of sharing a specific ETA as to when this feature would be implemented.

The second biggest addition to the Essential Phone will be the ability to double tap the screen to unlock the device. This is a feature that was made famous by LG, and is one of the best features on a phone, especially for those who want to check notifications without pressing the home button. As with EIS implementation, Essential did not share any information regarding a possible ETA for a release.

While folks are taking to Change.org to create a petition to bring Project Treble to the OnePlus 5T, Essential Phone fans won’t have to worry about all of that hassle. The second Android 8.0 Oreo beta will be arriving on devices next week, and Project Treble won’t be in-tow, but that’s all part of the plan.

Essential explained that Project Treble would not arrive on the Essential Phone until the Android 8.1 Oreo update is released for the PH-1. This is great news for the few Essential Phone fans out there, as this will make it easier for OEM’s to release updates to devices in the future, while possibly extending the support life for devices.
