Google TV Honeycomb Update Ready for Primetime, Coming to Current Hardware Next Week

22

Via the Google TV blog, the Android 3.0 update for Google’s smart TV platform is ready to go. The new release features improvements in four key areas, everything from a simplified and easy-to-use user interface to the inclusion of the Android Market for access to more apps than ever. Other tent-pole elements of the new software include a new “TV & Movies” app for browsing shows and movies from your channel lineup, Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, and more. Speaking of YouTube, video streaming is better than ever with an enhanced Google TV experience and deeper integration.

The update will be available first to Sony Google TV products starting early next week. Logitech devices will receive the update shortly after. This may explain the sticker found on the Revue’s packaging as of yesterday, though it is still unclear if hardware is shipping with the new update out-of-the-box.

  1. sweet!
now…get more streaming licensing from tv studios to complete this device. make me ditch my poor $15/mo cable subscription that gets me ABC/NBC/FOX!
    and go!

    1. why dont you use an antenna and get those channels for free?

      1. already on the search for my old DTV antennae, but i’m more into GTV for the (desired) ability to access NBC/fox.com to watch tv episodes that aired the night before–without having to pay $8 for HuluPlus (if that’s supported/going to be)

        1. Just hook a computer up to your tv. problem solved.

          1. on GTV u just gotta browse to a FREE tv/movie site…..there are dozens of them… stream straight to your TV as if it was a laptop

        2. just find a peer to peer TV and movie sharing site and pay nothing…..you never needed the ability to access nbc or whatever…..and u dont need netflix……although i do have it…..but point being, ive watched episodes of Tv shows that aired on the night they aired….for FREE….although most people on here frown at getting anything illegally……but seriously, if anyone here has actually paid for music in the last decade or so, youre just silly !…..

    2. You know, if you pay for cable internet and your TV has a QAM tuner, you already get those channels for free. In HD.

  2. About flippin’ time!

  3. I don’t get it, why didn’t they just skip honeycomb and go right to ICS.

Im still not sure I am following Google’s whole plan. Is the idea to have a seperate tablet platform and phone platform? Or will the two be combined much like apple does?

    1. Probably because, at least so far, Google TV has worked only on x86 chips, and they would need to ICS to x86, too (or the updates it received from Honeycomb).

      1. Why the heck did they go x86 in the first place. It seems to really ave slowed the GoogleTV evolution.

        1. To be able to use/include Google Chrome.

  4. They need to start making Kal-El set top boxes for $100 and push developers to make games that support gamepads.

  5. would be nice if google tv was merged with ics in some fashion, either as an app or part of the os. then i could simply carry google tv with me wherever my phone goes. at home dock the phone, hdmi out to my tv and fire up google tv. would be slick.

  6. Sweet! I guess this is the “soon” they were referring to a few months ago, lol

  8. I wonder if the new Revue still comes with that Chipotle burrito that was pictured on the box?

  9. Now, I just need the Boxee app for Android to hurry up and come out. Plex will work for now, but I just like Boxee better.

  10. Any word on if Google Music beta app is included?
    I need my streaming music

  11. Andrea here from Logitech. Wanted to let you know all newly purchased Revue boxes will automatically update with the new version of Google TV as part of initial set-up.

  12. Cant wait! It adds tons of functionality

  13. im confused by one of the four concerns noted…. users thought navigating in Google TV was too complicated ?? they needed to make it easier to use than it already was ??? was there a bunch of morons complaining ??? GTV is easier to use than the average pc or tablet….that being said, i cant wait for the update….gonna look sweeeeet on my 52 incher !!
