Google I/O 2024: Here’s what you can expect

0

Every year, Google announces a bunch of new products, services, and updates across its portfolio at I/O 2024. This year’s I/O is kicking off next week and we expect that the company will probably have a bunch of new things that they’d like to share. So, without further ado, here are some of the things we can expect Google to announce at the event.

Android 15

Google has already sort of announced Android 15. The company has released the Developer Preview and first beta of the platform, but we expect Google will probably dive deeper into the update at I/O. This will most likely see Google further elaborate on the upcoming changes and new features we can expect.

Wear OS 5

If you love Google’s Wear OS platform, then you can expect Google I/O 2024 to talk more about it. As part of Google’s preliminary schedule for the event, the company confirmed that they will be discussing the future of Wear OS. They explicitly mention Wear OS 5, which will be the next major update to the platform.

At the moment we don’t know much about what the update could bring to the table. Perhaps we can look forward to more customization options and health related features.

AI and Gemini

Google was kind of late to market with its AI. The company has been working on AI technology for years, but it has largely been unavailable to consumers. That is until OpenAI launched ChatGPT and lit a fire under Google. The company has since been rather aggressive with its Gemini AI platform.

I/O 2024 will most likely see Google share more details about their AI plans for the future and the improvements they are making. We’ve already seen Google expand Gemini beyond the consumer front. Just recently, the company’s researchers published a study in which it explored the potential use of its Gemini AI for medical purposes.

New Pixel phones

Now, the Pixel 8a was officially announced already. Will Google share more information about the handset? Maybe. They could touch on it a bit more, but everything that needs to be said has already been said, so maybe don’t expect too much. But what could be interesting is Google teasing the Pixel 9.

In the past, Google has teased upcoming products long before they were announced. This included devices like the Pixel Watch and Pixel Fold. Will Google tease the Pixel 9 this year? That remains to be seen, but it could be a possibility. Either way, we’ll have to wait and find out.

New hardware

It has been a while since we last saw a new Chromecast model. Last month, there was a report that Google is readying a new 4K Chromecast with Google TV, so maybe I/O could see the launch of it.

As for other hardware, it has also been a while since Google refreshed some of its smart home offerings, like its Nest Hub Max. Google also hasn’t released an updated Nest WiFi model since 2022, so the event seems like a great opportunity to announce new hardware.

When is Google I/O 2024?

If you’re interested in seeing the future of what Google has to offer, I/O 2024 will kick off on May 14, 2024. The opening keynote is scheduled for 10AM PT and can be watched via a livestream on YouTube.
