  1. Apple’s IP NEEDS to be protected! Thank goodness for Judge Koh!

      1. Yep

        1. Why? Nothing about this yet shows that the IP has been infringed. Ideas aren’t just protectable just because they are similar to each other. Intellectual Property law has been quite clear on this. Otherwise, Apple would never have been able to use any sort of computing ideas because Xerox, and IBM beat them to it. Neither would have Microsoft. Your line of reasoning by merely stating that Apple’s IP needs to be protected is nonsense. Using your blanket statement (which I can assume refers to the capabilities of Siri) Google could have estopped Apple from ever bringing Siri to the market because it merely is a “Search Engine” that uses an algorithm to find results based upon a query. I do believe Google was either the first or “One of the First” search methods that did not use the WebCrawler style search. After Google started using their method, then Lycos, Ask, and Momma began theirs. Even then Google could have been estopped by Baidu because they began their “PageRank” style searches in 1996, four years before google.

Besides all that nonsense aside, Courts recognize that there are only so many ways to do things these days especially when it comes to technology. Literally only so many ways the mouse can navigate the maze to get the cheese. This is not like Disney which heavily litigates their IP because they have a symbol, icon, or trademark. Trademarks must be litigated in order to be protected. A design process or method of performing a task has much higher standards.

          1. Alta Vista did search engines and translate before Google, and I believe some of their people were hired by Google.

          2. Totally forgot about Alta Vista! I knew I was forgetting another big early day search provider. Almost like forgetting about CompuServe’s blue welcome screen! haha

      2. No need to reply to him just another Apple zombie

    1. Voice control has been around for years, I use it daily on my pc to type emails, and control what I’m doing, how different is it from what we all used to have on the old nokias, it’s a progression not a new invention, standing on the shoulders of a tech and improving it isn’t stealing it, neither is developing similar items! If they code is copied then fair enough or hardware, but it has to be the exact item! Otherwise I’d sue my twin for copyright fraud!

    2. Apple’s lawyers need to be protected..

    3. You do realize that Android used voice commands prior to the time that Apple purchased Siri, right?

    4. Everyone else who developed apps for phones before the iPhone existed should band together and protect their IP against Apple.
      Voice command/search
Slide to lock (had it two years before the first iPhone on Windows Mobile)
      On Screen keyboards
      Icons on phone home screens
      Folders on phone screens
      Maps on phones
      Operating systems on phones
      Downloaded applications on phones
      contact lists
      Touch to activate an icon
      Copy and paste
      Web browsers on phones
      Bluetooth on phones
Press and hold icons for other actions

Well, pretty much everything in an iPhone existed before iPhones. But most of it was developed by little guys Apple never paid.

I’m surprised Apple hasn’t patented the wheel, so they can claim everyone is violating their intellectual property every time they make a car or skateboard. Though I’m sure the wheel that Apple would make would be prettier than anyone else’s.

Also, while very little of those early attempts worked well, and Apple did all of it better eventually, that’s not really the issue is it?

      1. Too true. If I remember correctly Java Brew was one of the first stable browser type platforms that could display a webpage. I seem to remember it on my old V710 Motorola flip. Let’s not forget my old Motorola Timeport either (that sucessor to the old StarTac flip) had a four digit pass word that would prompt when opened. I even remember my brother’s old LG that had a key you would slide on the touchscreen to the lock that would unlock the screen.

Fact is, all these things we see on our phones all started somewhere, and most likely from a defunct company that can’t protect the patent, which makes it mostly fair game. It doesn’t mean that Apple can claim the patent or anyone else, but what it does mean is they can use it with impunity. You make good points, Sir.

  2. Can’t wait for the GN update. JB looks sweet.

  3. Bing bang?

    1. That’s the new Microsoft TV show about four nerdy guys trying to use a search engine product.

      1. You don’t say?

  4. Impressive. Google Now is way more useful than the gimmick Siri.

  5. Impressive, but still so frustrating that it can’t make appointments in your calendar for you — unless it does and I just don’t know how… anyone?

    1. Its new and will learn just as Siri has learned over time.

      1. Well, it may be recoded so that it can make calendar appointments for you, but it flat out can’t do it now. Siri can. Maybe the one area that Siri has Google Now beat, I have to reluctantly admit.

  6. I honestly wonder how Apple is going to keep up….. though they have a big lead, they seem to be losing ground fast. I heard io6 isnt going to be as advanced as android 4.0 ICS ….and the new 4.1 JB is going to be the biggest upgrade to Android yet….dare I say the foolish words ” Apple killer”? – nah but I cant wait to see what they do.

    1. ICS was the apple killer >.> it even has a award to prove it, JB is more like the final nail in the coffin. Apple already has a plan, If you cant beat them litigate them

      1. In our minds yes it’s the nail in the coffin but the average consumer isn’t quite as educated about these things. Apple products will be around for quite awhile, even in their sub par form.

        1. I meant in terms of overall growth in the mobile phone market, i mean Blackberry devices are still around but now they have less then 5 % market share and going bankrupt, Microsoft is still around but they are around the same percent in market share and not going anywhere for a while, in the past year apples share has only grown .8 % not even a full percent and more consumers are starting to switch over to Android. the main thing iPhans love about apple over Android is the intuitiveness and the slick interface, well with ICS, Android surpassed iOS as the most intuitive and now in UI performance with project butter, its just a matter of time

          1. Oh I gotcha. Yeah Apple definitely topped out long ago in market share and while they do make a good product I think their success was because a lack of competition just as much as innovation.

      2. Much like soccer if you miss the ball don’t miss the man

    2. They’ve already started. They’re going to sue their way out of it. Hence the ban on Galaxy Nexus. I bought my wife, daughter, and myself one because of the ban. I hope they see a huge spike in sales supporting JB.

      1. lol good work dude!

    3. Apple doesn’t have to keep up. They’ll just get a judge to lay down for them and ban any products that are better than theirs.

    4. The ban is due to google voice search being able to pull information from contacts and other apps… so yeah, they just gimped it.

  7. It’s not over. Just wait until Apple’s patent for “combining words into questions or to form a command”, applied for in 2006, is approved–then all bipods will have to pay the Big Fruit royalties or be enjoined from speaking forever!

  8. Cool, very, very cool!

  9. should’ve played Real Estate by wiz….

  10. Lets not forget apple bought siri

  11. For a new product this is amazing better than when siri first arrived. Google said its going to get better imagine the possibilities.

  12. s-Voice opens up your calandar.

  13. Did apple really think they can beat google in the search game? Thats like google trying to build a phone that can be more revolutionary than what apple is known for in the iphone. Oh wait… :)

  14. Dude, I had to pick up my jaw after watching this. Frickin amazing, I cant wait for my nexus 7 to come.

  15. do a barrel roll! haha priceless

  16. apple is done, only the most ignorant sheep still prefer icrap over android.
