At the moment, our messaging systems are still kind of basic. You send and receive messages and that’s pretty much it, but for those that rely on Google Messages, that could change in the future with the app being able to make smart suggestions for the user.
This is according to an APK teardown by 9to5Google in which they discovered that in the future, Google Messages could actually make suggestions to users on which messages they should star and which messages they should schedule. This means that if Google thinks a message could be particularly important, they might suggest that you star it to make it easier to refer to later.
According to the explainer text discovered in the APK, it seems that things like phone numbers and dates will help trigger these suggestions. It’s actually a pretty cool idea but one that we’ve kind of seen before in other Google services. Google is no stranger to suggestions, like with Gmail where it can suggest quick replies to emails so you don’t have to type it out.
Even Google Search can make suggestions based on what you had initially typed, so it’s pretty awesome that Google is bringing something similar to Messages. It also feels a bit like what Google had intended at I/O 2022 where they said they were looking to build a more connected ecosystem.
We’re not sure when this feature is expected to go live, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
