The other day at I/O 2022, Google finally took the wraps off its Pixel Watch. Details were scarce but basically Google confirmed the watch’s existence and that it would be launched alongside the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro later this year.
Unfortunately, it seems that our excitement has since quickly evaporated if this report from 9to5Google is true. According to the publication, it seems that the upcoming smartwatch from Google could end up packing some very old and outdated hardware. The report claims that the watch could use Samsung’s Exynos 9110 chipset.
This is a chipset that originally debuted in 2018 which means by the time the Pixel Watch is launched, it will be about four years old. A lot of advancements in chipsets have been made over the years so it’s weird and somewhat questionable that Google would choose to use this chipset instead of something more modern.
As a brief recap, the Exynos 9110 was built on the 10nm process (versus the 4-5nm process we see on chipsets these days) and features two Cortex-A53 cores. According to 9to5Google, the reason is because development on the Pixel Watch began a while ago when the 9110 was still new, but we don’t see why Google couldn’t update the design to use something more modern.
Using such an old chipset not only impacts its potential performance, but also its ability to be upgraded as we’ve seen in older phones. Either way, take it with a grain of salt and hopefully Google will have better news to share when the watch is officially announced.
