The next Moto X is expected to land this summer, and while we don’t know much about Motorola’s plans for a sequel to one of their best selling smartphones yet, we have a bit of a clue as to what they’ll be calling this mystery. As leaked by @evleaks, we could see Motorola bring their 2014 offering to the storefronts of the world as the Moto X+1.
The leak didn’t give us much more beyond the wide release window of “coming soon,” but there’s no harm in letting our thoughts run wild. For starters, we’re certainly wondering what Motorola’s stance will be when it comes to processors. The original Moto X was seen as “outdated” as it was a custom configuration based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4.
While not all of us are in line with that belief — yours truly wrote an editorial about it last year — Motorola has to answer to the more vocal crowd, and that crowd seems to want some heavy duty firepower inside. Motorola also stuck to its guns on using 720p resolution in their high-end options, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do in that regard. We also wouldn’t mind a camera worth lifting a finger for.
Motorola was applauded for nearly everything else about the phone, though. Namely, their ability to provide 24 hours of battery life on just a 2,200mAh battery was quite popular, as well as their custom processor setup that enabled Touchless Controls and Active Display.
That build quality was as well as we’d ever seen for a phone, and the fact that they didn’t mess with Android’s stock user interface too much sat well with those who prefer not to deal with bloated OEM skins. Our full review has all the details in case you happened to miss it.
There’s no doubt Motorola has a lot riding on this upcoming release. Pressure to improve growth and financials have caused them to go back to the basics in every facet of their business.
It also doesn’t help that the company is in between being sold off to a third-party entity for the second time (that being Lenovo, if you aren’t in the know). With the launch of this new Moto X+1 paired with forthcoming innovations such as the gorgeous Moto 360 smart watch — both of which are still buoyed by longstanding rumors that Motorola will reenter the tablet space — 2014’s spotlight will definitely be fixed squarely on their backs.

[Update]: It looks like we might also be getting new options in MotoMaker for this release, with the same leakster tipping us off to possible leather backing options. No word on if leather will completely replace wood as the premium option for the 2014 model, but there it is.
this plus 1 and 1 naming scheme in general is annoying…just make it the moto x 2014…or moto x2….would love a moto nexus 8 built through moto maker though to replace my og n7 a man can dream cant he
“Moto x 2014” seems more of a mouthful than just putting a single digit after the name “Moto X”. Kind of like having to put “2013” after the Nexus 7.
Split the difference and just make it the Moto X 14.
This phone was a top contender for a new phone for several month for me. If it would have launch at the $400 price range, and had a 5″ display, I probably would have bought one.

Nexus 5 is $400 – $450 and meets my criteria.
You’re talking about a different class of phone.
How so? Moto X is Moto’s flagship and the Nexus is Google’s. If anything, spec wise, Nexus is above the X. Most reviews put them fairly close as far as performance.
From your description I think you wanted a Nexus 5 ^_^
The debate was: Nexus 5 and wait for my contract to end w/ Verizon or Moto X and get a new phone faster or used LG G2 and get a “new” phone whenever I find one cheap enough. Ended up waiting and getting the Nexus 5.
The Droid Maxx is the 5″ versions, but only for Verizon.
Didn’t want to be tied to a contract on a CDMA network.
Might get this to replace my nexus 5 horrible mic and speaker plus shorty radios are pushing me straight to moto if Google can fix it I might just stay nexus 5 is a awesome phone other than that.

I hope and think Moto may release two phones. One that has moderately upgraded hardware from the current model, with an attractive price point similar to today’s. Then a second higher specced version for the “all the bells and whistles” crowd. They just need to be prepared to pay a premium.
They should just upgrade the G and the X. Keep pricing similar.
Make it available outside of NA (with some customisation) this time please Moto!

It could be another case of phandroid assuming that the US phone market is the only one in the world
Ah, I totally missed that part.
“best-selling” is used as a term for something that’s a hit, it doesn’t necessarily need to take #1 to earn the term, which can be confusing. It’s used that way all the time with books referred to as “bestsellers” when only a few will ever actually top the chart. That said, the Moto X has not been seen as much of a sales hit, so it’s probably an inappropriate use in any meaning here.

Hold on there, Q. Hard to believe the X outsold the Moto G (which is killing it in the UK), or even the original Droid. Google stated they were disappointed with Moto X sales. Have any sales data for us?

I’m just hoping they keep the same size and form factor of the phone. I don’t care about spec improvements too much, other than the camera. If its announced that its going to be bigger then I’ll just buy the current X.

I’ve seen rumors of a Motorola phablet. I wonder if X+1 makes more sense for a 5.7″ Moto X?

I think all the electronics brands have thoroughly worn out the term “one” and “plus” and any combination therewith. Xbox One, HTC One, One Plus One, etc.. These have become gross marketing terms like “synergy”, “out-of-the-box”, “extreme”…
Doesn’t really matter what they call it so long as they keep the naming scheme simple. I would guess it’s be the Moto X2.
Just don’t mess it up, same design with an updated X8, better color calibration on the non-pentile OLED, better camera, and a few others tweaks is all it needs. Don’t make it any bigger, 4.7″ is perfect.
The best naming scheme in my opinion, is that of the MacBook Pro/Air. Keep the name, and when referencing a certain model, use something like “3rd Gen MBP” or “MBP 2014”. The name should remain Moto X, it’s better for branding.
I also hope that they make the new one available in Europe on it’s initial release (and the full range of variants)
What is this 24-hour battery life you speak of? Try like 8 with very little use, sitting in my bag doing nothing while I’m working/in class. Started out great in December, now it’s no better than the 2-year-old gnex it replaced.
