0
Google has taken a noteworthy step towards ensuring the longevity of its Pixel 8 series by pledging an impressive seven years of full OS upgrades.  However, this promise is hinging on the hardware’s ability to match the longevity of the software. In order to make this happen, Google has partnered with iFixit to offer genuine parts and tools for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. This allows customers to be able to repair their own devices when things break.

The Good

The collaboration with iFixit allows users to access common components like screens, cameras, and batteries. If you are to opt for one of their kits they include all necessary parts and tools you need to make the repairs. This is useful for users who may not have a toolkit at home. Repairing your device yourself is an environmentally friendly alternative then just chucking the devise. It aligns with the right-to-repair movement, empowering users to take control of their device maintenance.
One standout feature iss the availability of replacement batteries at an ultra-low price point of $43. This makes it a cheap and affordable way to address  battery wear that occurs over time. Doing this allows users to potentially extend its usable life.

The Bad

However, it’s important to say that not all the parts are cheap. A rear case replacement for the Pixel 8 is priced at $143. While a new screen at $160. Similar costs apply to the Pixel 8 Pro, with a rear case at $173 and a new screen at $230. These costs are higher compared to the Pixel 7 series, some options to repair are better than none.
Not everything will be able to be done at home. The new motherboard for Pixel phones from iFixit has soldered USB-C ports. Professional repairs through official Google channels or independent shops become crucial to make these happen.
It’s good to see that this collaboration is proving to be a net positive. The availability of replacement parts lets users to contribute to the reduction of electronic waste. All the while promoting repairability. While at-home repairs may not work for everyone, the coexistence of official Google repairs and independent shops ensures that users have options.
