Google promises 10 years of updates for Chromebooks

The problem with technology is that it moves at such neck breaking speeds that it would be unrealistic financially to try and keep up. Even upgrading once a year or once every two years can result in pretty high costs, but one way companies keep their devices fresh and exciting is through software updates.

The good news is that if you happen to own and use a Chromebook, Google has announced a new software update policy in which the company promises 10 years of software updates. This means that if you decide to keep your Chromebook around for 10 years, you’ll be guaranteed to receive updates that will keep your device up to date with the latest security patches, bug fixes, and new features.

Unfortunately, not all Chromebook users will be able to enjoy this new policy. According to Google’s announcement, this will only apply to Chromebooks that were released in 2021 or later, so if you bought one in 2020 or earlier, it looks like this policy will not apply to you. Also, these changes will only come into effect starting in 2024, but that probably won’t matter too much since we’re already approaching the end of the year.

The promised 10 year update is huge and in many ways impressive. Even companies like Apple, who are known for their software commitment to their hardware, average about 6-7 years of updates for their Mac computers, so in a way, Google’s new policy trumps theirs.
