Nokia G50 arrives with 5G, 5,000mAh battery, and sub-$300 price tag

If you’ve been hoping for another solid sub-$300 smartphone, then the Nokia G50 may be right up your alley. HMD Global announced the device earlier this morning, aiming to undercut many of the other popular budget-friendly devices with a solid set of specs.

The Nokia G50 features a 6.82-inch LCD display with a v-notch cutout for the selfie camera. Powering the G50 is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 480 chipset, along with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of storage. Plus, there’s a microSD card slot if you want to add even more storage to the device.

Embedded in the power button is a physical fingerprint scanner, so you won’t have to worry about being annoyed with an under-display scanner on a device this cheap. Aesthetically speaking, there’s really not much else to be excited about, as the Nokia G50 just looks like many other recently-released Nokia handsets. This includes the round rear camera module, with its 48MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide lens, and 2MP depth sensor.

There are a couple of surprising inclusions when it comes to the Nokia G50. For one, it features a massive 5,000mAh battery, although you won’t be able to enjoy any super-fast charging speeds. According to HMD Global, this will provide up to two days of battery life on a single charge, which is simply fantastic, even if it’s a bit expected at this price point and with these specs.

The G50 is also being marketed as being “future proof” and that’s evidenced by the inclusion of 5G connectivity while using Android One for the software. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack if you’re still not ready to join the Bluetooth movement, or just really prefer using wired headphones.

The Nokia G50 is available starting today and comes in either Ocean Blue or Midnight Sun. Pricing starts at $299 for the base model, which features 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. At the time of this writing, both models are out of stock, with the Ocean Blue not shipping until October 4th, and the Midnight Sun shipping on October 15th.
