Samsung Galaxy Fold’s display has its durability tested in video

For whatever reason, Samsung has chosen to be very coy with its upcoming foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold. No one was allowed to get their hands on the handset during its Unpacked event which only led to more questions. More recently, a video made its way online that showed the phone being handled.

The biggest takeaway from the video was the fact that the phone had a very huge and obvious crease right down the middle, leading many to speculate about the durability of the phone’s display. To put the minds of customers at ease, Samsung has since released its own durability test video where they show the Galaxy Fold being folded repeatedly by a small army of robots. According to Samsung:

“Samsung subjected the Galaxy Fold to several rounds of extensive tests in its state-of-the-art reliability labs. Naturally, given the smartphone’s design, a Folding Test was a pivotal part of the Galaxy Fold’s durability assessment.”

At this point in time, not much is known about foldable smartphones given that they’re pretty much new technology, but according to Samsung, the display should last 200,000 folds and unfolds, which they claim should be good for five years of use assuming that one opens and closes it 100 times a day.

Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but given its price tag, it does seem like an expensive way to find out. The Samsung Galaxy Fold is expected to be made available for pre-order on the 26th of April with a release set for the 3rd of May.
