It’s true that USB-C is fixing to become the new industry standard, but we still have a long way to go before we see universal or even wide-spread adoption. We’re certainly getting there, but as it stands, micro USB — which is used to power everything from Bluetooth speakers, headphones, and game controllers — is still king. It’s this reason I applauded Samsung for sticking with micro USB for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, making their phones compatible with the hundreds of cables the whole world is already using.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited about USB-C but only after it reaches its full 3.1 potential (super fast transfer rates, display out, high-powered charging). Right now, the Type-C port you find on most devices these days offer little more than the convenience of a reversible design. It’s the ability to insert the cable any way you like that fixes one of the pain points in dealing with modern USB connectors be mini, micro, or even larger-sized Type-A connectors. If you’ve ever fiddled around with a charging cable at night, you’ll know it can be an all too frustrating experience.
Regular micro USB (left) vs new reversible design (right)
It’s only been recently that we’re finally seeing the evolution of the micro USB cable. This new type of micro USB cable offers a reversible design not too unlike Type-C, something we saw in a Kickstarter campaign about a year ago. With this new design now readily available from manufacturers, we stumbled across some nice looking ones from Omaker (the same guys that made that powerful pocket-sized cube speaker we told you about). There were others we found on Amazon, but none that were quite as premium or affordable.
One of the things we found most intriguing about Omaker’s reversible micro USB cables is that they aren’t just orientation-agnostic on the micro connector side, but the full-sized USB Type-A side as well. That’s right — both sides are reversible. This means you’ll never again have to pay attention to how you’re inserting your cable whether it’s your phone or the charger itself. In the dark, behind a cabinet, or even after a drunken night out when you find yourself completely inebriated, the cable will always go in the right way. The first time Every time.
Omaker’s micro USB cables are reversible on both ends
Omaker’s cables feature a woven fabric interior with a soft-touch, almost silicone feeling, housing that wraps around the cord. According to Omaker, this will ensure the cables outlive most others that normally suffer from cracking or breakage after long term use. My favorite part about the cables is that they’re extremely flexible and lightweight, making them easy to wrap up for transport. The included clip also holds everything together, which was one of those nice little touches we appreciated. The housing on the ends of the cables are metal with gold-coated plugs for added strength and less corrosion. At about 3.3-feet, they’re a bit short, but sadly it’s the only length Omaker offers at the moment.
We’re sure you’re probably wondering whether or not these reversible cables support Quick Charging. Well, they do. We’ve been using them on both the the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, working without a hitch even when using the OEM Adaptive Fast Charger. Omaker also notes that they’re rated for high-speed data transfer up to 480Mbit/s (even though we can’t remember the last time we physically plugged into a computer to transfer something).
We should warn you, although it’s rare, there could be a slight issue with compatibility depending on the receiving device. It didn’t happen often, but once in a blue moon we’d find that a random accessory or smartphone (the Honor 5X, for instance) wouldn’t charge, leaving us scratching our heads as to why. Again, it was something that was rare and right now they’re currently charging our UE Boom 2 Bluetooth speaker, PS4 controller, Galaxy S6, S7, and Sony A7S II camera perfectly.
Back to more about what we love about these cables. They have amazing grip, securing firmly inside the port and take a little effort to remove. There’s no shaking and you wont have to worry about the cables “loosening” over time. This is something that has been a problem for us with most regular micro USB cables since the beginning of time, but for whatever reason, Omaker’s reversible cables have been holding secure as day 1, even after months of use.
The Omaker reversible micro USB cable is easily one of the most premium cables we’ve ever owned, which is surprising, given the affordable price tag. In fact, we loved their cables so much, found them so life-changing, that we were the ones to reach out to Omaker who was gracious enough to supply us with a handful of free and discounted promo codes exclusively for our readers.
Normally priced at $13 for a 2-pack, Phandroid’s exclusive promo code will get you $5 off your order. That’s 38% percent off and only $4 per cable — one helluva deal for some of the most premium micro USB cables you’re likely to ever own. It sounds dramatic, but I’m not even joking when I say these cables will have a profound impact on your life (just as they did ours). Should you run into any problems down the line, Omaker’s hassle-free money back returns covers the cables for 3 months after purchase. Can’t beat that with a stick.
