Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy S4 now receiving KitKat

Rejoice, Galaxy S4 owners on the Now Network! Sprint is beginning to issue the upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat, meaning you’ll be receiving goodies like the ART runtime, a built-in framework for translucent status bar, and the ability to easily switch between different SMS apps with ease.

Of course, the Samsung-specific changes aren’t quite so numerous as the South Korean company brought most of the important user-facing goods in the Android 4.3 upgrade. Those changes included new camera features, KNOX security and support for Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smart watch.

Sprint did have a few specific changes of their own, though:

  • Prevention Information alert: Customers should no longer receive “Prevention Information – An application has been forced to stop for an unauthorized attempt to access system in your device. It may be safe to delete an application obtained from an unauthorized route. Check now?” alert messages on the device.
  • Zact Mobile: Device now includes the Zact Mobile compatibility.

Aaaand that’s pretty much it. Not the most exciting affair in the world when it comes to new functionality, but it’s nice being on the latest and greatest software Google has to offer. You’ll be looking for version JDQ39.L720VPUFNAE, so head to the settings menu and hit that software upgrade button as soon as you can (but be sure to turn on WiFi and get a good charge on your battery before attempting the update).

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Sprint: First in updating their devices of the big 4. Last in data speeds in the big 4 category/ group.

    1. Hey, you can’t have it all!

      1. You can with verizon!

        1. including caps and ridiculous fees

          1. Sprint has truly unlimited data. They always have and say they always will…

          2. what sucks about them is their lack or REAL 4g coverage for their capable phones.

          3. That was then … Sprint has come a long way from being the worse 3g/4g lte, to now becoming one of the better network connections. By next year this time, Sprint 4g lte / 3g will be awesome.

          4. Their LTE is so random. I’ve mentioned this before on another post but I saw 17mbps in Nixon, TX. Huh? That place is a blip of a town.

        2. Uhm, except for the timely updating thing. Or did I miss the sarcasm?

          1. missed the sarcasm lol :)

          2. i was about to comment and then i saw this… i missed the sarcasm as well lol.

          3. IKR, I had to wait FOREVER to get Kit Kat on my Moto X

        3. Verizon limits you to a useless amount of data!

          1. True but luckily i still have my unlimited data plan

          2. I have unlimited data on Verizon. I guess that means you’re useless

          3. Unlimited… heh? Define unlimited. Lol. All other carriers except Sprint either throttle or cap their data network.

          4. Unlimited: Not limited or restricted in terms of number, quantity or extent.
What does it mean in whatever language you speak?
I use as much data as I want without paying extra and its never throttled “lol”

        4. I had BMW in my area they’re not far from Sprint. Where I’m working my downloads speed over 24Mbps and the up around 10-14Mbps . I am happy with it. Plus my monthly payments way lower than VZW.

  2. ART is useless until Google fully switches it to the primary Android runtime.

  3. Dam, sprint has been on a roll huh, ATT pissing me off

  4. come on uncarrier. my note 3 is waiting

  5. I thought Samsung was disabling ART.
