After Google promised current Explorers the 1-time opportunity to swap out their first generation Glass for the new v2 model, we were beginning to wonder if we were ever going to get the invite. Today seems to be that special day, with a few Glass Explorers on Phandroid’s team — myself included — now receiving swap instructions in our email inboxes.
Current Explorers who purchased their Glass before October 28th are the only ones eligible for the swap, having until February 5th to begin the process. Before you ask, yes this is a swap, meaning we wont be giving away our old pairs here on the site (I know, we’d really like to). We should note that Google did mention that they’d be doing something “special” with the old pairs, but wouldn’t say at the moment.
Google promises the new and improved Google Glass Explorer Editions are faster, more durable, and compatible with their upcoming accessories like stereo headphones and prescription lenses. I smell another review incoming…
I got the invite to buy but I declined since I don’t feel like spending $1500 on it right now..
same. i declined mine too because of the insane price.
Likewise, just before XMAS.
Though my bday is right around the corner. Donate to my fund!
I second that, plus $50 charger, etc….That dough’ll get u lots of other USEFUL products…If it was like $500, I’d do an impulse move and just buy it…but they don’t even have my color…
Still it is not clear if you have to send the old ones first..
The entire email wasn’t pictured, but I talked about it in the post. The old ones will HAVE to be sent back first, and once they’ve been received, the new models go out.
Don’t swap, but a new one. In 10 years, your first gen Google Glass will be worth > $1500.
Or it could be worth $.05
Old electronics do not (unfortunately) act like classic cars. The only exclusion I’ve seen is old games brand new in box.
I beg to differ but ground breaking first generation items often sell for lots of money. the first generation Sony CD players sell for big bucks and recently working Apple 1 computers have been selling around the $700k mark. I guess the only question is: Will Google Glass be a ground breaking piece of tech?
I wear prescription gunnars currently (glasses for computer nerds and gamers) and the nerdiest thing ever would be to put these lenses in glass. I really want to do that.
I got an invite…during the holidays. Curse you Google! You send me an invite when I have gifts to buy!
I’m in the same boat, after I got the PS4 and X1. sigh
This is THE definition of “First World Problem”
Does anyone know about a left-eye version anywhere in the pipeline?
They should be giving these test versions for free especially with all the money they make.
