Nokia makes fun of Android 4.4 KitKat on Twitter

75

Well, isn’t this quite the bold statement? Apparently, Nokia has had themselves a little chuckle over Google calling the next version of their mobile operating system “Android 4.4 KitKat.” That name was dropped on us just a couple of days ago, with Google and the company behind the chocolaty treat going as far as running a contest, creating Android shaped KitKat bars, and erecting a huge statue of it on building 42’s lawn.

To commemorate the event, Nokia’s German Twitter account posted a Tweet with a photo of a Samsung Galaxy S4 being broken in half, telling folks that it’s OK to “have a break.” The gory photo was almost too much to stomach. And that break looks a bit too clean — it’s almost as if someone took a chainsaw to the poor thing.

It’s yet another move in a long string of childish antics by Nokia, who has seemed almost desperate to gain some buzz for their Lumia line. For starters, they showed up with big golf signs at Samsung’s Ativ S launch event “welcoming” them back to the Windows side, and even had the nerve to block a massive Samsung billboard ground ad with a truck that featured an ad for a Lumia 1020.

It seems that Nokia is the biggest joke here, with the company struggling to gain relevance in the competitive smartphone market. Nokia has decided to do its bidding with Windows, but it wasn’t until this past week that the company was 100% committed to that. They agreed to sell off their devices and services business to Microsoft for an as-yet undisclosed amount.

It remains to be seen whether or not Nokia’s new found ownership will do anything to help their chances up against the seemingly unstoppable machines known as Android and iOS. One thing’s for sure, though — it seems every move the competition makes seems to keep Nokia up a bit too late some nights. Take a look at the damning photo above.

  1. I kinda feel bad for Nokia, but then I realize that if they put this much effort (very little) into releasing an Android phone and doing their thing they’d probably own the smart phone market. Instead they are backing frivolous law suits, laying in bed with Microsoft and releasing mediocre windows phone 8 devices (mediocre because of windows 8).

    1. So true. Nokia should have known how much of Android fan base rooted for their hardware. They could beat Samsung with one left hand, should they ever adopted Android as their OS of choice.

  2. Weird jab at Android as to me it’s just good advertising. It reinforces the Android and Kit Kat brands even if it shows a broken phone. Nobody will see that and think oh no the new version of Android will mean phones will snap in half. Nokia have made one bad decision after the next and went from ruling the mobile ecosystem to being a real long shot. Shame.

  3. Look at all the responses to the tweet, hilarious!

  4. Is Nokia really in position of making fun of other manufacturers and OS’s?

    1. F*** you microsoft

  5. Agree with every Quentyn’s comment in the article. Nokia(Microkia actually) is a joke.

  6. Job well done in the Marketing department for Google and Android OS….Nokia is looking quite desperate these days

  7. As bad and as desperate looking/sounding as the “Scroogled” campaign was.

  8. Nokia show Microsoft on this phone where the bad Android touched you

  9. NOKIA – “Have a… nothing?”, oh right, we forgot, we’re Micro and Soft now.

  10. It’s a shame Nokia got sucked into the windows only deal. They used to make awesome phones.

    1. They still do. It’s just the OS that sucks.

      1. have you ever used a win8 phone…its a really pretty ui flows much better n smoother then android…but lacks the customization and all that makes android great…i still rather have it then ios which is even more boring

        1. I have. And I’ve owned a Lumia 900, and countless WinMo devices before that, going back to the days of WinCE Pocket Edition.

The Lumia 900 proved that Nokia can build gorgeous hardware when they want to, and that Microsoft has learned absolutely nothing in the sixteen years they’ve been developing an OS for mobility.

Yet again, Microsoft pulled the rug out from under their customers with another “There’s a new version on the way, and no, you can’t use it on your existing device that was released three months ago.” They can’t help themselves when it comes to burning their mobility customers – and they’ve been doing it for nearly two decades now,

More importantly, developers have no reason to trust that what’s being sold as the Windows Phone 8 today will share a code base (read: platform for continued sales) with whatever they decide to call Windows Phone 9 — or that there will even be a Windows Phone 9 (remember PlaysForSure?)

iOS may be “boring”, but Apple doesn’t leave their customers out in the cold nearly as fast. Heck, their currently-shipping OS runs on the 3GS that was released over four years ago!

  11. Did you know that humans void their bowels shortly after death? That’s what this is…..Nokia’s death poo…..

  12. To bad its no longer a Nokia Lumia. They sold out to Microsoft so the only ground they’re going to gain is in Microsofts shadow. Say hello to the Microsoft Lumia Surface RT 8?_?

  13. Nokia should’ve gone the Android way. Would’ve loved to see an Android Nokia device. : /

  14. Lmao!

  15. Says a now completely irrelevant company since owned by Microsoft. I personally wouldn’t purchase anything MS makes so goodbye Nokia.

The world has gone mobile with Apple and Google the new duopoly. They both make excellent products so that won’t be changing anytime soon.

    1. this is just silly…windows is the best computer os…i’ll never understandt he hate for microsoft id never buy an apple computer but will forever be loyal to windows…ive always looked at android like the windows for cell phones as opposed to ios…until windows started their own thing which meh to blan for me

      1. Re: Windows. Most dominant on desktop computers – Definitely. Best computer OS? Most definitely NO.

        1. Better than OSX at least.

          1. Purely subjective. As someone that bounces between PC at work and Mac at home, there’s very little difference other than UI design. They both crash in certain instances, they both have their lag and other problems. The only thing PC still has over Mac is more video game adoption. Outside of that there’s nothing a PC can do that a Mac can’t do and vice versa. mac vs pc is a tired argument with almost no relevant points for either side.

  16. its very FUNNY… GREAT IDEA !

  17. Man you guys dish insults out towards the competition all day, ( especially your zealot commenters on here ) and when one hits back y’all get all mad like someone insulted your momma lol. Priceless.

  18. Funny, but sad Nokia phones gone, and microsoft will epically drive them into rip

  19. What’s a Nokia?

  20. Seems more of a jab at Samsung as it is Android. Now go focus your efforts on actual marketing. This one is quite good, too bad no one really knows who you are anymore.

I cant even recall anyone of my thousands of customer who uses a Windows 8 phone, let alone a Nokia.

    1. Samsung makes windows phones too so I doubt that is what it is. I think they just picked one of the most popular android phones

  21. Too bad there is no more Nokia phones

  22. i kinda wish win8 would rise up and be a true competitor…kinda tired of the just android vs ios…mix it up win8 is actually a really nice ui but its just lacking…then again once youve used n fell in love with android everythign else seems lacking

  23. this ad is funny though because i can easily snap a galaxy phone in half lol

    1. Want to make a bet on that? It’s already been tried in trying to duplicate the Apple Cracked Back iBendOverEasy to Crack a Smile at the iDiots who bought me iPhone 5! ;-P
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZiT8AlhUMQ

Reality? …..Samsung uses same parts to make the Nokia Killer WP8 smartphones too! haha…. so the truth is Nokia wasn’t really cutting Android at all. They were flat out aiming to flim flam their greatest competitive Nemesis….. SAMSUNG!

Plus this won’t sell them anymore WP8 phones themselves either! ……so what’s that sales ratio between them now? Something like Samsung sells a Million for every 100 devices Nokia sells!!! hahaha….

      1. I absolutely can break an s4 in half easily despite all your mumbo jumbo u just typed…im strong…wont look like the add but itll be in half

        1. Not even with a hammer could you do that

  24. *sigh* there there Nokia. I know you want attention. But the best way to get positive attention is to make good phones. You should have a sit down with Microsoft so you can try to make it all better.
    :)

    1. Oh goodness no, don’t talk with Microsoft. If there’s one thing that’s sucked more than Nokia’s WP marketing it’s Microsoft’s WP marketing.

  25. It would be funny if Windows phone wasn’t such a massive flop with barely any apps available.

  26. So with ms buying Nokia are they killing Nokia off or will it be like Google and Motorola?

    1. Microsoft didn’t buy the rights to the Nokia name for smartphones. They did buy Lumia though

    2. Not that it really matters because a lot of the people at Nokia with the knowhow are leaving.
Then again they have been leaving for a few years now.
Makes you wonder why. I guess a lot of them didnt like the step togo WP only.

  27. goodbye Nokia

  28. So sad they became this desperate if only they would have used an os people want they would be king of the mobile industry but they sold their soul to the devil (Microsoft).

  29. I give the Windows Phone and Nokia brand name till Christmas 2015, after that they will be completely out of the game.

    1. you are very generous

  30. Free PR for Android, kitkat and Samsung. Nokia Fail

  31. Wouldn’t you know it….. lol…. mighty hard for Nokia to deal with the fact SAMSUNG not only owns China the #1 Smarterphone Market, they now totally own India as Nokia prepares to exit the now 2nd largest Smartphone Market as well. Not is SAMSUNG nipping at Apple’s heels (actually in real numbers sell more phones in America) in the US now in 3rd place, but SAMSUNG has totally obliterated Nokia on a Global basis the last two years!

Yeah…. I think Nokia probably should be a little wrangled about that, but a better response would have been to not have zipped up the zipper on their strange bedfellows of Balmer and Elop in the first place!!! ;-P …..afterall if they had kept up on Symbian and Maemo 5 development…. SAMSUNG would have been their Partner instead of most feared competition driving them into the ground with “Too Late WP8”!!!! :D

  32. Hey, I wouldn’t own a windows phone on a bet, but that was clever.

    2. It’s some company that used to make cell phones back in the 90s, dunno what happened to them.

      1. They’ve sold out to microsoft of which I really don’t know why Microsoft and Nokia are now failing companies in the mobile division. Funny thing is… Nokia could survive on it own as it had previously they used to be a great company a real great company that made affordable feature filled devices…. Now their devices are pretty but pretty useless

  34. Kit Kats are sweet and made to share, while Windows are just big holes.

  35. Nokia what? A few more years and they won’t be around! ;)

  36. I am a proud Android owner, but even I have to admit this is damn funny. lol

    1. Yeah it is funny but i dont think Nokia is in a place where they should be allowed to make jokes about anyone.

      1. I agree. I mean I do get a chuckle out of the commercials where the Samsung crowd and the Apple crowd are engaged in battle, but while the commercial is amusing the strategy is poor. The statement they make is that customers of these companies (which make up, by the way, an overwhelming majority) are uninformed, closed-minded and immature. That may or may not be true but insulting the customers that you wish to win over will not get the result they are going for. And why in the world would they team up with Microsoft? That’s a sinking ship if I ever saw one. I’ve used (and enjoyed) Microsoft products for years but I truly believe that Windows 8 was the start of a slew of horrible business decisions on their part that will ultimately lead to their demise. Now it’s just a race to the bottom for Nokia and Microsoft. It’s a shame because in their day they both made some great products.

  37. Nokia is just sorry they went Windows. They are saying to themselves, “we should be making Android phones”. Too bad they are just butt hurt.

  38. Its funny cause they make fun of themselves in their commercials. Everybody has either a Samsung or iPhone Ana are fighting yet, out of the entire crowd the are only 2 people who have the Nokia. Just like in real life

  39. What sucks is, Nokia is like Matthew McConaughey’s character in Dazed and Confused. He’s the coolest guy in his circles, he’s older, wiser, seen a lot and will have no trouble getting by. Unfortunately, he’ll never be accepted again by his peers that are younger and hipper. The older and more desperate he becomes, the less attractive and useful he’ll be. Nokia was the Samsung of it’s era. Microsoft needs them to stay relevant in the mobile phone business, so they should accept where they are in the niche and keep improving there.

    1. Best. analogy. ever.

      1. Android: “Say man, you got a good YouTube app?”
Windows: “No, not on me man.”
Android: “It’d be a lot cooler if you did….”

  40. Isn’t it “Gimme a break”? Not “Have a break”?

Who wrote that ad, a 12yo? If you are going to do a slander ad, at least do it right.

    1. It is and has always been “Have a break”

        1. The US isn’t the only market where KitKat is sold, it isn’t even the primary one. Nestlé own the brand and they use the slogan ‘Have a break’. Hershey (who license the brand in the US) may have their own similar slogan but it’s the Nestlé slogan being parodied here.

        2. In the majority of countries (including Germany) the slogan is “Have a break, have a kit kat”

  41. This not show any bad effect for the popularity of Android smartphone…..Still many of the gadget lovers are select Android.
    http://www.phonexists.co.uk/

  42. As much as I am a huge Android fan, the whole KitKat cross-branding is a turn-off to me. It just seems cheesy and unrelated beyond the name.

Honestly, its something that I would expect Microsoft to do.

  43. Cmon Nokia, why don’t YOU have a break and actually install KitKat on your next phones so you can really be a competitor? Windows phone is in the sideline, nobody cares about who’s in the sideline…

    1. they can’t install any other OS other than Windows on their phone dude, Microsoft has acquired Nokia, now Bill Gates is their boss, they r doomed.

  44. BlackBerry 10 all the way! WP8 is better than IOS and android! IOS 7 is a rip off of BlackBerry 10 n PlayBook OS! Android and IOS are outdated!

  45. It’s funny because Nokia is one of the few companies that can make a jab at everything else for making weak phones, its a silly ad for sure, but it is playing on Nokia’s reputation for being indestructable.
