HTC Thunderbolt Gingerbread OTA Supposedly Suspended Due to Voicemail Bug

38

Well this doesn’t sound so good. Wireless and Mobile News has apparently heard it from Verizon that the Android 2.3 update for the HTC Thunderbolt has temporarily been suspended. It was reportedly due to a voicemail bug. They mention it specifically as a notification bug which sounds like the same bug Sprint’s EVO 4G had for a long while. We’ve seen at least one user report of this at AndroidForums.com but have since been able to corroborate the report.

Verizon reportedly had this to say:

It has come to the attention of Verizon Wireless and HTC that customers using the Thunderbolt by HTC have experienced a voicemail notification error with the recent software update. As a result, the update has  been temporarily suspended while the companies work together to resolve the issue. Verizon Wireless and HTC anticipate the update being available soon; customers will be notified directly on their devices when it is ready for download.

We haven’t been able to confirm this report ourselves but we’ve certainly reached out to Verizon and will update you folks the moment we hear back. In the meantime, let us know if you’re seeing the same bug, and if you’re on Froyo let us know if you are able to pull update down. [Thanks Mike!]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. I was able too get the update here in Baltimore md ..I’m on gingerbread ..woot woot ..No problems either ??

  2. I’m assuming this only applies to VZW’s voicemail and not Google voice? Which begs the question, who actually uses Verizon’s ”stock” voicemail anymore?

    1. Was thinking the exact same thing.

      1. Exactly my thoughts. Got the update, enjoying the increased battery life and other Gingerbread goodies, have no use for the voicemail to work anyway as GV is working perfectly and that is all I use.

So, still a great update for me, bummer for those who rely on standard voicemail. Hope an update is coming soon for them.

    2. I use the stock voicemail by Verizon.

    3. i just tested it and googlevoice is not affected.

however there is another bug that occasionally prevents folders from opening, and ruins the ‘jump screen’ after hitting home twice.

otherwise, gingerbread has been awesome for me. today i discovered ‘power efficiency mode’ (settings > power), which allows toggling between 3G and 4G.

  3. Its happening to me. I wonder how many months I’ll have to wait for a fix?

    1. If you’re not using Google voice you should start. Waaaaay better than the stock voicemail on the network.

      1. Amen!

  4. I got the download and I love the increased batter life, almost a full day. I turned off LTE and made it 15 hours, still had 41% battery life left. Just tried to download update on my wife’s thunderbolt and it is not available.

  5. This thing device was really promising when we were hearing rumors about it but it seems like it has been nothing but problems since launch day.

  6. I updated a coworkers phone and the voicemail notification wouldn’t go away after she deleted the new message. I restarted the phone and the notification went away.

  7. Anyone having issues with HQ video playing?….especially in YouTube?

  8. You won’t notice any problems untill you reboot your phone and get all your voicemail notifications that didn’t show up the past few days.

  9. Haha, I just said on XDA a few days ago it was probably due to the voicemail bug, I guess HTC is too proud to read XDA and learn it’s still an issue before doing a failed release.
HTC, you make generally very good software, just admit your not perfect and utilize the large base of basically beta testers you have at XDA

  10. Hm. Maybe they suspended the OTA since a dev on rootzwiki found the fix. They should thank him.

    1. He found it awhile back, my issue is they knew about it and still pushed out the update, that smells of arrogance. They didn’t care about screwing up the phones

  11. Glad I found this story… My TB was unable to receive OTA updates but I wasn’t having problems with the random reboots so I didn’t really care until the GB update came out. So, after talking with both HTC and Verizon techs on the phone, I decided to go into my local VZW store. They swapped the SIM card and my phone was able to downloade the 1.70.605.0 update (goodbye free hotspot that I never used) but not the Gingerbread update and I couldn’t figure out why.

  12. I haven’t noticed the voicemail bug but I just updated yesterday morning… THE ONE ISSUE THAT I DID NOTICE is that when my phone rings, and I don’t want to answer it, I USED to be able to press volume down and it would silence the ringer, now it answers the call! Anyone else notice this or am I missing something?

    1. Just tested it and I don’t have that issue…

  13. post from HTC USA’s facebook page…

HTC USA ‎@Andrew We are aware that customers using the Thunderbolt have experienced a voicemail notification error with the recent software update. As a result, the update has been temporarily suspended until the issue has been resolved. Verizon Wireless and HTC anticipate the update being available soon; customers will be notified directly on their devices when it is ready for download.

  14. Funny how I’ve had GB on my phone for like 6 months. #Cm7 :)

  15. You would think this is one thing you would test before releasing an update lol. Another poor update for the tb come on HTC.

  16. Gvoice works fine here and i LOVE the update. 2.3 FTW.

  17. I was able to get the update and now I have no data connectivity. I am only able to check email, internet, Twitter, etc if I have a wifi connection. Anybody else have this issue or know of a fix?

    1. I had that happen on the last update. It was simply that my network connection under settings had been unchecked. Give that a try. Settings->wireless & networks->mobile network. Good luck!

      1. That was it, works like a charm now. Thanks for the help, saved me a trip to the Big Red store.

  18. Had a voicemail I forgot to delete the day before the update. Still have the notificaiton, even though I deleted that message and the subsequent one (which I was not notified of)

    1. I had this problem. I did a restart and the notification went away for me.

  19. Why are you people bitching???? You wanted the update now, now that you have it your complaining wtf. Just shut up and quit being a little babies. Verizon and HTC are not entitled to give any of you anything, if you don’t like it go somewhere else. Verizon wireless and HTC are a business they have to make money to pay overheads and shouldn’t have to deal with this. They do there best at pleasing people, if you complain your bill is too high get a different plan or your phone sucks get a new one. No one twisted your arm. Gotta love listening to people. They give you a seven hundred dollar phone for three hundred and people do nothing but bitch, the update didn’t come fast enough, it’s this, it’s that. People complain so Verizon tries to be nice and rush the update then there is one problem and here we go again.

    1. damn, this guy is a moron! ‘Don’t blame the provider for pushing out a bad update!’? If we collectively give them millions of dollars that they spend on development, and then everytime they push an update it has a problem.. we aren’t supposed to get upset? I purchased this phone 1 month after it came out. 2 days after that, they release a radio that cause me to have random reboots 6 times a day. I had always used my phone as an alarm, and could no longer use it as an alarm. It would reboot in the middle of half the calls. Now they push out this update and it is full of bugs. It is rediculous! This is the most expensive phone on the market as far as I know, and it is literally the most buggy. I have not see a phone this bad since the very early days of Android..

I have never replied to a forum post before, but in my many years of reading through forums and news groups, I am not sure I’ve read someone so blatantly blind to the workings of the world. I am very glad that you can waste your money as you so see fit, but if I spend 300$ for a phone, and then have to spend 400$ to cancel my plan to switch to another provider, then pay 300$ for another phone on another provider….. JUST to get away from these bugs… lol I don’t think I need to go on from there, as I hope you get the point.

  20. Did the GB update and since I did it only problem I have noticed is that the phone signal is weak…I am repeatedly in 1x in areas where I was always 3G and 4G… I wish I had a voice mail problem but poor connection is not cool…laying in bed now and always had 3G but phone says 1x…WTF.

  21. I got the update… AND the voicemail bug. Spent an hour on the phone with three Verizon people. They are investigating the problem and working on a fix.

  22. I got mine the day it came out. Only a couple reboots total and the voicemail notifications are working, although they didn’t register that I had erased them correctly. I did have some text messages that went to the wrong recipients, but I read that was an Froyo issue rather than the phone itself. I can’t complain too much. Most of the time it works great and the GB update made it really smooth. I don’t get why they all have the same hardware (I think), but they don’t behave consistently.

  24. This has been a known issue for at least 2 to 3 months prior and yet Verizon STILL chose to release the update only to have to pull it again. They’re idiots over in the Verizon business team. I’ve worked on a project with Verizon folks and I can tell you first hand how incompetent they are when it comes to addressing issues that affect customers.

  26. Just received a voicemail notification today with numerous voicemails that were several days old I did not know I had. Verizon, HTC & whomever else is responsible for a fix to this CRITICAL issue better get this resolved very soon.
