Are you an experienced and knowledgeable tech enthusiast? Bomb shell: we want to pay someone full-time to cover everything Android-related and beyond! Interested?

Please read EVERY DETAIL of this post before submitting an application – attention to detail is crucially important.

What we’re looking for: Full-Time Utility Player to cover overnight hours (7pm to 3am EST)

What does “Utility Player” mean?

  • Overnight hours are usually light on news, but we want a team member standing guard, ready to bring our readers the breaking news they crave… regardless of the time of day
  • When not working on time-sensitive material, you’ll work on our Android Phone Guide, upcoming Android Tablet Guide, and other Tech Device Guides, ensuring everything is up to date and accurate
  • You’ll also publish articles on our upcoming tech-related sites, covering news and information about topics such as Google TV, Chrome OS, general mobile technology, and beyond
  • Other miscellaneous tasks.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Availability: 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday between 7pm and 7am EST
  • Location: as long as you’re reliably available according to above hours, you can work from anywhere in the world!
  • Experience:anyone can apply, but those with proven writing/blogging experience preferred. Overall tech knowledge with thorough and specific understanding of both Android’s history and current happenings.
  • Age: must be 18+

Expectations:

  • Ability to identify newsworthy and noteworthy items that qualify for Phandroid coverage
  • Ability to pump out quality, accurate, entertaining articles at lightning speeds
  • Ability to write in-depth application and device reviews with an informative and entertaining style
  • Ability/comfort in creating video reviews of applications, devices, events, etc…
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment while multi-tasking effectively
  • Ability to learn quickly and complete miscellaneous tasks as assigned

What you’ll get:

  • Monthly compensation based on experience
  • Opportunity to travel to events as press in order to provide coverage
  • Experience of covering what you love as a full-time job
  • And just as a kicker, I think we’re a pretty fun team to work with in general. We’ve truly built a team atmosphere and I’m excited to welcome a new member that “fits”.

How to apply:

  • Send an E-Mail to jobs[at]phandroid[dot]com
  • Copy and paste “Full-Time Utility Player” in the subject line… without the quotes
  • Tell us your name, age, location and a little bit about yourself
  • Tell us your work history and why you are perfect for the job
  • Tell us how much time each week you can dedicate to Phandroid
  • Copy/Paste/Link us (no attachments) to 1-3 related writing samples in the Phandroid style (minus the typos)
  • Convince us that you’re the “go-getter” we’re seeking!
  • Please TAKE YOUR TIME in submitting your application – we’re looking for quality of applicants, not how quickly you can show your interest/urgency

We’re anticipating a large quantity of feedback and simply cannot respond to every applicant we get. We want to thank everyone in advance for their interest and we’ll follow up with potential candidates in the near future.

    o yeah i use to write for wmpoweruser.com way back when…

  2. I would love to guys but I already have a full time job, damn. :*(

  3. So basically a job change is in mind here, right? I doubt compensation could match current earnings, tho… Hmmm

  4. What’s the closing date for the application? I’d love to apply, but I’m busy with the end of the term right now and won’t have time to compile an application for a couple weeks.

  5. -> Ability to identify newsworthy and noteworthy items that qualify for Phandroid coverage
    -> Ability to pump out quality, accurate, entertaining articles at lightning speeds
    -> Ability to write in-depth application and device reviews with an informative and entertaining style

    These must be new job requirements!

  6. Haha.. Sean, you hater..

  7. Yes I’m extremely interested!

  8. I already have a decent full time job, but this would absolutely be a “dream job”. So I will apply despite the unlikely scenario. Definitely wort a shot.

  9. So how is the pay based, USA? So if I live in the slums of Buenos Aires or the Motor city I would at least get US minimum wage? Sweet!!!

  10. @Sean – ROFL

    In all serious to Phandroid editors, been noticing more and more how some content in articles I am reading at other sites isn’t showing up here for a day or two. The spelling and grammar thing is just plain ridiculous. I hope this new position helps some of these things. If not, I will stop complaining and just delete Phandroid from my book marks.

  11. Acecakes. I am seriously, seriously considering this. I’m on the verge of leaving IT altogether for something I actually care about, but don’t have a clue what to do. This sounds right up my street; I spend most of my day at work reading about Android and tweaking my phones.

    Unfortunately I have no writing experience, unless you count tech documentation and my time at school.

    Also, I still don’t quite understand how you arrived at “Utility Player” as a job title? Does it involve hitting washing machines?

  12. Is the pay at least minimum wage?

    Also are the hours 7pm-3am or 7pm-7am? Two different times are stated above. 7pm-7am M-F would be a 60 hour week.

  13. The hate in these comments has me scratching my head. If you find the news to be late or have a problem with the grammer or spelling then why do you not only still frequent the site but you take time to post a comment? While Rob and the others don’t need me to defend them I do like to take a little time to tell others when they’re being giant D Nozzles.
    To those that feel the need to tell everyone that they would love the job but can’t take the pay cut, please keep that to yourself. I won’t be applying but the reasons are my own.

    Simmon your writing skills are fine by me, good luck.

  14. We(I’m speaking on behalf of myself, but also assume my reasons are similar to those of others who post corrections to content in the comments section, but not rudely) frequent the site because we care about Android and this is our blog of choice when it comes to the little green robot.
    I read all Phandroid articles through Google Reader and come here only if I really want to comment on the story, or correct spelling or grammar. We come here to correct the spelling or grammar because we like the site and want it to be as good as it can be. I’ll be applying for this position. I just need to write a few articles to submit as samples as I’m not a professional writer.

  15. Over 18?

    Oh sad day, well I’ll just wait for an opening in a year or two ;)

  16. You will be receiving my application shortly.

  17. @su2lly thanks for your support

    Concerning hours: the 40 hours/week would need to be between 7pm and 7am… 7pm to 3pm was an example and is probably preferable.

    Concerning Pay: it’s an entry-level job and you could expect compensation to be in the $30k/year ballpark

  18. KELLER in the house o_O

  19. why don’t we go crowd sourcing round the clock for free?
    the timezone works fine for me since i am on the other side of the globe.

    the big boys does go 3 shifts on news standby;

    we could do something in 4 shift based on volunteer basis;
    team UK on UTC +0, team US on UTC -5
    team ME on UTC +4, team Asia on UTC +8

    {UTC+0 1000hr-1600hr}
    {UTC+0 1600hr-2200hr}
    {UTC+0 2200hr-0400hr}
    {UTC+0 0400hr-1000hr}

    [UTC-5 2300hr-0500hr] (UTC+8 1200hr-1800hr)

    everyone just works on a central deposit of news;
    and each team just send the happenings from their shift to the next.

  21. @Rob Jackson
    I just sent my resume in to you a few minutes ago. Regardless of what others think, Phandroid is still one of the top Android news sites/communities

  22. Woot! Just submitted my “application” to work for you guys! I think I let with you during CES at the T-Mobile party, right? Anyhoo, I look forward to hearing from you! :D

    – @Gamercore

  23. You mention no attachments for the articles we may have written. You also mention going through our prior work experience, does this mean you would rather us type out our prior experience?

    Or is it okay to attach a resume and then further go into detail with our experience?

  24. Thank you very much for the opportunity, I am very excited for this, and hope that I can be considered for the position. I have sent in my application, lets see what happens! Good luck everyone!

  25. Why is everyone posting that they can’t do the job or serving up pre-emptive complaints?

    Remember folks, this is not a job, it is a JOB. Are you all sure you know what it is like to be a reporter?

    Think carefully before you apply, it is not just writing about cool stuff or taking a slacker approach. It is a job and you will be expevcted to work. And accurately report with no bias.

    Take that from a full time freelance writer.

    Bob

  26. I would want to, but I’m 3 years to young, this would be a great job for me. Especially when I get to college! But I guess I’ll wait and stick to my tech news channel on youtube for now :)

  27. Email sent, even if it is a bit long-winded. Look forward to hearing from you Rob!
    Scott

  28. Sent in my application, here’s hoping!
