Original Motorola Droid, Devour Nearing End-of-Life?

34

Uh-oh. Those dreaded “end-of-life” rumors are starting back up again. This time, the original Motorola Droid and Motorola’s forgotten Devour might be on that list of devices headed out of the mill. DroidForums caught wind of an internal screen showing both of the devices as “limited” or with “no remaining shipments” to be had from the vendor.

It would make a lot of sense. The Motorola Droid 2 is expected to be revealed very soon with its predecessor having been out since early November 2009. After 9 months, it’s to be expected. That doesn’t mean support would completely drop, it just means Verizon will be doing their best to push the latest in the Droid line into the hands of their customers.

Verizon’s currently holding another one of their famous BOGO promotions for the phone, as well. We didn’t think anything of it, at first, considering they hold these all the time, but it’s possible we could be seeing the final hoorah before the torch is passed onto bigger (and seemingly better) devices.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Yep DROID did its job and now on to bigger and better things, well slightly better the DROID 2 shouldn’t even hold that title it should be DROID + since its just a refresh sure it has a killer processor but everything else is almost the same old stuff me having the original DROID I surely will be skipping g the new one, if I don’t get the X it will be the Fascinate.

  2. For the first time I think I could actually keep my phone (droid) for 2+ years.

  3. The Droid was certainly a milestone (haha) advance in Android phones. It can still run every android program including 3D games without any problems. I expect that people with be hacking Android 5.0 on it in a few years (like the G1 runs froyo) and it will still run fine.

  4. It may be end of life but I’m keeping my Droid. It’s a great little phone that does everything I need. I like the look of the Droid X but I won’t be upgrading until there is an LTE android phone. There are enough feature in my Droid to keep me happy for at least another year.

  5. My rooted droid is about as fast and has all the features as any other phone on the market today. I’ll wait another 4-5 months until the dual processor super phone hits the market.

  6. Jeez, could we at least wait until the “new every two” kicks in? How about good news, like Froyo?

  7. “Me”, you know what else it has? A full stop key.

  8. Although I do like better that the Droid X has hardware phone buttons at the bottom, I hate the capacitive buttons on my Droid, they are too easy to hit by accident. And I never use the hardware keyboard except for Snes emulators – I would rather have the phone be lighter.

  9. Considering the OG Droid is capable of running all the newest OS updates simply because its rooted and allows custom ROMs, I would say its definately more valuable than the Droid X already. If Moto would stop supporting the X in say 8 months, the OG Droid would still be getting updated. That is crazy.

  10. As long as they give me 2.2, I’ll be happy.

  11. Didn’t the Devour just come out? Just goes to show that Moto sucks!! Why would they waste their resources on such a low end device considering how many great phones came out in the last 6 months. They should of left the Droid be the low end device. As far says “Stupid is as stupid does”!

  12. @DanGrover

Ssssh…don’t let Me know about the period key. It’s a secret!

  13. My Droid has been great and I will keep using it even if I replace it someday. Even if its only used as an XBMC remote for my entertainment enter.

  14. I agree with the “new every 2” post. Crap, if I have to keep it for two years you think they would have to promote it for two years. I love everything about the Droid especially 2.2 and don’t plan on trading it in for an X or a 2 but gee, its not even a year old yet!

  15. something has to be done with these stupid 2 year contracts

  16. Long life to one the best smartphones ever made.

  17. They’re not going to stop supporting/updating the Droid. They’re just going to stop selling it. Why would you keep selling the D1 if you’re selling the D2?

  18. Sooo disappointed in the X. Love Moto hardware, but I can’t stomach their software. No root = no sale with me. Can’t believe they would alienate the very users that brought Moto back from bankruptcy. Not sure I care for Sanjay. I’ll go with HTC or Samsung before I go with a locked down bootloader.

  19. Who cares about NE2, it’s irrelevant for most early-adopters/gadget lovers anyway. The only point in NE2 is to rope those with expired contracts into signing a new 2 year agreement. Verizon knows this, and that is exactly why when phone refreshes starting happening yearly (as opposed to every other), they reduced NE2 from $100 to $50. In my opinion, $50 is worth waiting an additional year, when I can easily use Annual Upgrade to get the latest and greatest every 12 months. It was different when the typical smartphone cost $300+ on a 2 year agreement, which was only like 18 months ago.

  20. EDIT TO ABOVE: I meant “In my opinion, $50 ISN’T worth waiting an additional year, when I can easily use Annual Upgrade to get the latest and greatest every 12 months.”

  21. If the X had an open boot loader like the original then this article might have some merit. But I’m hooked on custom ROMs.

  22. Oh well… certainly around Thanksgiving/Christmas something will come out to trump the X… and by then I’ll be in 1 year upgrade territory… and if I decide to wait the full 20 months til July next year, I’d expect something even bigger then. I’ll go ahead and root this thing at some point to stave off the tech-envy, but I’d like to see stock FroYo before I jump into that.

  23. Verizon knows they screwed up when they allowed the open droid on the network. I wouldn’t trade my rooted droid for 2 droidX’s! Locked down bootloader? I’ll pass.

  24. It makes sense. Get user feedback, change the things that you can, reduce the manufacturing cost, and replace the original with an update. SOP. Not that I’m giving up my Droid anytime in the foreseeable future, but I understand the process.

  25. Man im so pissed!! I love my Droid but the charger port messed up & stupid asurion gave me an Eris…. I bought the Droid, I bought cuz I liked it Bette than the Eris…. ugh im so mad!!

  26. I have had the devour for four months and it has been a total disaster. Actually, this is my 3rd one (the agreement won’t let me change phones without a penalty). Chief reasons why it sucks: 1) the battery is drained by 5pm every day, unless I use the “task killer” apps every 45 minutes or so (why should one need an app to shut down 10 programs, running entirely on their own though not being used, in the background!?). The phone cannot even last an average workday. 2) Despite its claims, it doesn’t sync with contacts in gmail consistently. In fact, somehow it actually deletes from time to time (both my mom and dad were deleted, somehow) and other times it combines information in odd ways (example: my sister Rachel’s number suddenly became my coworker Rich’s. I was wondering why Rich kept texting me about breaking up with his boyfriend…when he has a wife and family of his own). Last weekend I had an emergency and had to call someone about a basement flooding…..but my droid devour erased the contact! I was livid.

I have a lot of contacts, a few thousand, and I guess it can’t handle them. It freezes a lot too. I am about to break this contract to go back to the Blackberry. This may be a fun phone for teens or something, but it is a total disaster and I have sunk needless time and money into this overmarketed sham.

  27. Oh my gosh, I thought I was the only one experiencing these problems! I’m so done with my droid devour. It is not a dependable phone at all. I’m on my 2nd devour. My phone currently shuts itself off whenever it wants (even with a full battery), I experience the same contacts merging and missing contacts, it freezes daily, I keep my battery fully charged at work and it still dies within 2 hours of not being charged. The port where you charge the phone is bad and it sometimes causes the phone to never be able to be charged. That happened on the first phone also. Some of my pictures that have been saved on my phone for months are suddenly not able to be viewed fully. They are loading half-way or not at all. My facebook no longer works on the phone for some reason, it doesn’t always recognize the sim card inside, the list can go on and on. This is by far the worst phone I’ve ever owned. I too, am currently switching over to a Blackberry.
