We weren’t expecting Unicode Standard 7.0 until next month, but it looks like it’s arrived a bit early. Available starting today, the update, which introduces 2,834 new characters, is bringing something far better than historic scripts or extended support for written languages across the globe (who needs all that junk, right?). Say hello to a whopping 250 all new emoji. Because sometimes there’s nothing that quite gets your point across like flipping someone the bird in pictograph form.

Everything from various hand signals, to new smileys is being added. Just keep in mind that platforms like Android and iOS will need to be updated to support the new standard, so don’t expect to find many of these new emoji until later updates. If you’re curious to see which new emojis made the cut, the folks at Emojipedia have provided us with the full list. Check it out below.

  1. I dont understand emojis. Ive had a GS2 and a HTC M8 with Sprint, and both phones couldnt read them. I gave up trying to get it to work.

    1. Ehh, even if they do work, I usually don’t care. It takes longer to hunt through the list of emoji to find the right one than to type whatever it is you need.
I did get a good laugh out of the Hangouts app’s google play page. The conversations were like 1/2 emoji. That would take so long to do…

      1. I dont care about sending them, i care more about receiving them becuase people send them to me all the time, and all i receive is black diamonds, which signifies my phone cannot read the emojis.

    2. They’re for the kids.

      1. I act my shoe size all the time

    3. They can read them with hangouts and Google Keyboard

  2. We’re advancing backwards to hieroglyphics.

    1. You have a very disturbing point my dear friend.

  3. I’m guessing that 99.9% of these emojis are only ever regularly used by OCD teenagers.

    Simple Smilies 4 Life. (nosmileyinsertedhere)

  4. Does anyone actually use these? Absolutely pointless….

    1. Pointless ? I disagree. I don’t use them all the time but as the post says sometimes an emoji is simpler and more creative than anything you could write or type

  5. Is there a standard for the actual pictures, or is it up to the manufacturer to draw anything that represents the unicode name?

  6. How do we install this?
