Sprint officially flips the switch on 4G LTE in 15 cities spanning Georgia, Texas, Missouri and Kansas

If you count yourself among the many Sprint users who purchased a 4G LTE handset in advance of the high-speed network’s official launch, today you can realize the full potential of your device. Sprint has activated their next-gen coverage in 15 cities spanning four states, extending from initial pilot markets of Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, and San Antonio. At the moment only folks residing in Georgia, Texas, Missouri, and Kansas have the pleasure of experiencing data speeds in the range of 6-8Mbps for downloads and 2-3Mbps for uploads, with more regions promised by the end of 2012.

Much to the dismay of residents like myself, Sprint has not passed along word of an activation of their network in Baltimore, though the city was listed among the initial lineup when the carrier unveiled its plans to rollout their LTE network. Check out the press release below for a full list of new 4G markets.

Sprint plans to launch additional 4G LTE markets in the second half of 2012, which will be announced later this year. By the end of 2013, Sprint expects to have largely completed the build out of its all-new 4G LTE nationwide network – with an all-new enhanced 3G network – covering 250 million people across the United States.

Network Vision Means an All-New 3G & 4G Network

To better meet the growing voice and data demands of wireless customers, Sprint is building an all-new, nationwide 3G and 4G LTE network through the Network Vision program. Whether a Sprint customer is using a smartphone to share a picture or to check the Web, Sprint 4G LTE will make it faster.

Coupling the speed of 4G LTE with the industry’s only truly unlimited data plan for smartphones makes Sprint the best choice in wireless.* Additionally, the new network will provide significant enhancements to Sprint 3G service once the improvements are completed.

Customers are expected to experience better signal strength, fewer dropped/blocked calls, faster data speeds, expanded coverage and better overall performance as the improvements roll out across the country. Sprint has a history of innovation, as it was the first national wireless carrier to offer 4G service with the launch of the Sprint 4G (WiMAX) network in 2008.

The launch of these 15 cities demonstrates the continued commitment by Sprint to invest in its network through Network Vision. For the most up-to-date details on Sprint’s 4G LTE portfolio and rollout, please visit www.sprint.com/4GLTE.

The Wireless Industry’s Most Customer-Friendly Data Plans

In today’s competitive wireless market, the value of unlimited has never been more apparent. Sprint’s Everything Data plan with Any Mobile, AnytimeSM includes unlimited data, texting and calling to and from any mobile phone in America while on the Sprint network, starting at just $79.99 per month for smartphones (pricing excludes taxes and surcharges).

Sprint continues the trend of delivering value to customers through its portfolio of 4G LTE-capable devices and unlimited data experience with Sprint Everything Data plans. Sprint has already launched five 4G LTE-capable devices for less than $200 – HTC EVO™ 4G LTE ($199.99); LG Viper™ 4G LTE ($99.99); Samsung Galaxy Nexus ($199.99); Samsung Galaxy S® III ($199.99 for 16GB version); and Sierra Wireless™ 4G LTE Tri-Fi Hotspot, the nation’s first to support 4G LTE, 4G WiMAX and 3G ($99.99) (all pricing excludes taxes).

During the past several years, Sprint has been working hard to deliver the best customer experience. Recently, the American Customer Satisfaction Index ranked Sprint No. 1 among all national carriers and most improved in customer satisfaction, across all 47 industries, during the last four years.

  1. I wonder if this will have a more reliable connection than the Wimax 4g. I have the original Evo 4g and if it connects at all its not for long before i loose connection.

    1. When the rollout completes for a market it should but it sounds like LTE isn’t activated on every site yet for most announced cities. When complete, wherever there is a voice signal, there should be LTE. That isn’t the case with WiMAX because it’s on higher band, LTE is on same band as voice.

  2. LTE is still extremely spotty in ATL, I know the market may not be complete but I expected to have some 4G in at least a few spots consistently

    1. It’s spotty in KC too. They really should have a city 70% covered before announcing it, not 20%.

      1. Agreed, this is like Wimax all over again

        1. What Sprint should do is rollout LTE unannounced like they did with WiMAX and let users on it while building it and then officially announce the market when >50% complete. That would manage expectations better yet let people use it before officially announced.

          1. Patience, grasshopper. Patience.

      2. i disagree, i’d rather spotty coverage and have LTE 20% of the time than to have solid “3g” coverage and download at .12 mbps 100% of the time. If you don’t want your 20% then send it over here to new york

        1. That’s a good point but I just switched from WiMAX phone with much better WiMAX coverage, so I was thinking of going back until better LTE coverage. But the 3G performance has improved so much around the city that I’ll probably stick with LTE phone and wait it out.

I also found out that Verizon announced LTE cities with only 50% coverage.

          1. yeah my wimax speeds were garbage so i didnt care about losing my 1.5 mbps download speeds

  3. Hmm I live and work in downtown Dallas, Texas, have my Galaxy Nexus running in LTE/CDMA mode and still nothing yet. 3G only…though I do seem to have an improved 3G signal.

    1. I’ve heard updating your PRL may help, but I can’t attest to this since I’m not in an LTE area (yet).

      1. Did that earlier, no dice. I’ve been checking around and it’s apparently only surrounding cities, not Dallas proper so far. Bummer :/

  4. Wonder how long it will take Sprint to give Mississippi some LTE seeing how Mississippi never got 4g.

  5. Got off a plane at Love Field in Dallas at 11 pm last night (7/15). Booted up the EVO 4G LTE and was thrilled to see the 4G light up with full bars, then just as quickly, it switched back to 3G and has not come back since. I am still in LTE/CDMA mode but have not seen 4G since. Even tried restarting, turning on and off airplane mode, and switching betweent CDMA only and LTE/CDMA. Still getting nothing. Been in Dallas, Plano, Frisco, and Arlington. I want more G’s!!

    1. Update PRL and Profile in Settings

  6. I just got my phone to connect and stay with LTE getting around 19 down and 14 up great connection :-)

  7. Doesn’t matter. I will never see it … But that’s why it’s the cheapest, and that’s why I sit here with Sprint 10 years later hehe thumbs up to those that have!

  8. I just checked the coverage map, and where I am it shows that I have the best 3g & 4g lte coverage but my phone only shows 3g…how do I connect to 4g lte?

    1. Same for me dude. I tried prl and profile updates. I have my network mode on lte/cdma. Turned my phone on and off. Airplane mode…. Nothing brought lte :-(

  9. Hey, that’s great, but I have a better idea. How about I be able to get even close to MF’ing 3G speeds here in Fresno? I get worthless speeds all over town. Sprint has seriously gone downhill. It’s upsetting, because I used to love them, now I can’t WAIT to jump ship. If I had the cash, I’d cough up the ETF and GTFO, but I have to suck it up.

    1. Fresno eh? NICE. My GF has Sprint here in Fresno, and she has THE SLOWESTTTTT data speeds I’ve ever seen. Good to hear its not just us dealing with this garbage…stay strong my friend…stay strong

    2. My thoughts exactly. Get my 3G speeds right before worrying about putting in a new 4G network.

      1. That is exactly what they are doing.

  10. I don’t have any better 3G speeds. Nor do I even have very much 3G in Northwest Houston. Maybe when I leave school and go back to the SouthWest. I’ll try it there. I know I have 3G over there. Hmm…

I roam at my house and get FULL 3G/4G WiMax coverage and max speeds across the street at the store. I wonder if that problem is fixed now. It’s so stupid. -_-
