Microsoft to launch cross-platform app that pushes media to Xbox 360? [Rumor]

31

This might just be the most interesting Android-related news to have come out of Redmond in a long, long time: apparently, Microsoft is working on a cross-platform app called the Xbox Smart Glass, which will allow users to push media to their TV screens via the Xbox 360.

The rumor originated at The Examiner, where they claim a “Microsoft Confidential” presentation in the build up to E3 highlighted app. If it works sufficiently well, we can easily see quite a few people choosing the Xbox over Sony’s Playstation 3.

Anyone out there looking forward to this besides me?

  1. Microsoft has to look out for their cash cow. :P

  2. Couldn’t the PS3 already do something like this?

  3. Awesome! Ive been waiting for a long time!!! :-)

  4. yes that is awesome

  5. This sounds really intriguing! I hope it’s true…

  6. I think if this pans out it will be fantastic. Just another reason to love XBOX 360.

  7. DLNA is already on the 360s and PS3 and one most newer phones or simply download a dlna app and you can do this

  8. I dont understand, cant you already do this by hooking up an xbox 360 to a TV? And how is this android related..?

  9. What I can’t understand is why Sony haven’t donesomething similar? They even have Sony Android phones..

  10. Consoles are starting to disappear. Can’t beat them. Join them!

  11. Please let it be so!
Then maybe my xbox will have some use again. Hope it comes with a browser, so you can even stream youtube on it, either on the console or through your phone.

  12. I most certainly will not suddenly change my entire console for this as you have suggested. I love my PS3 for many reasons (blu-ray support, better graphics card, etc.) and pushing media from my phone to an xbox will not suddenly cause me to sway and switch sides…

    1. I meant at the time of purchase.

      1. As great as a feature as this might be, it would still not make much of a dent as compared to larger features like the controllers, cpu, and decoding speed.

        1. For some, it might. It depends on the purpose being bought for. Some do buy consoles to be more than just consoles, if it works significantly well (and only time will tell) it might be the deciding factor.

          1. Only time will tell

  13. yeah, definitely did this a long time ago with my Droid X to PS3. DLNA!

  14. Nevermind, i think i get it. This would be very cool! For those who dont want to buy another device for pushing media from your phone to your TV

  15. Like has already been said, you can do this already with DLNA and a PS3 or any other DLNA-compatible device. Biggest news here is that Microsoft is making a more proprietary version tthat only works with a single device. That and I’m betting most people don’t even know what DLNA is or what it does.

    1. DLNA doesn’t quite cut it. I don’t want to simply play media on my local hard drive to my tv, I want to stream whatever is on my screen to my tv. Galaxy S3 is going to have this feature if you have their device hooked up to your tv. Apple is doing this currently with their ipad3 to their apple tv boxes. Too bad Google TV isn’t doing anything on this front.

  16. Finally catching up To Sony’s PS3 and Samsung’s All share services. lol

    1. except you don’t need to pay a monthly subscription fee to use those devices as an all in one media device.

  17. Microsoft needs to fix their subscription model.

There are lots of people that don’t game that would like to use other services, such as netflix, ect on their xboxs.. but we aren’t going to pay to use a service we already pay for that doesn’t use even use microsofts network.

Until then I know I will never be using my xbox for much more then rare single player gaming, or a mediacenter extender (which is pretty much the only reason I own it).

    1. It really seems more like you’ve chosen the wrong device, rather than anything wrong with Microsoft. There are plenty of TVs and Blu-Ray players that can stream Netflix without going through Microsoft. A PC can be set up as media extender. Heck Verizon has a PC app that can be accessed via their DVR.

      1. It’s not that I have chosen the wrong device. I have a smart tv, smart phone, HTPCs, PS3, Xbox, Roku2, laptops.. so I have plenty of devices that do what I want. My problem with microsoft is the direction they are trying to go with their product is kinda of flawed. The only people that really have a supscription are the gamers who play a lot. Most people who want media content (who aren’t frequent gamers), won’t be choosing a xbox as their device.

No big deal to me, i’m just voicing my opinion, and my guess is there are a lot of people that don’t like that they hide services behind their subscription, that other devices don’t.

  18. Only way this will fly is because its marketed where DLNA really isn’t. Otherwise it would have to do mirroring and then it might be worth it.

  19. 360 has YouTube already

  20. iMediaShare is a free app that does this. it’s in the Play Store.
turn on phone wifi, connect to same wifi as the 360, and your phone is a media server from which you can play music, show photos, watch videos.

hopefully this is more streamlined–if there is a way.

cool they’re at least developing for android, though.

  21. Been wanting this for about…oh it must be an eternity now.
