Samsung Galaxy Player Quick Take – A Galaxy S Without Phone Capabilities [VIDEO]

18

Samsung has finally formally announced the Samsung Galaxy Player, and if the countless images and promo videos of the thing leading up to this week didn’t tell you as much, then I can tell you from hands-on experience that this is little more than a Galaxy S phone, sans the actual phone stuff. It’s powered by Samsung’s 1GHz Hummingbird processor, has Android 2.2, and TouchWiz 3.0 sits on top of that.

They described the screen as being a 4-inch Super-Clear LCD display, but couldn’t clarify on whether or not they just meant Super LCD. Also, it only has a 3.2 megapixel camera and can only record DVD quality video. We couldn’t even extract details on whether or not you’ll be able to expand storage via a microSD card slot, and they had no information to offer regarding different built-in memory options.

I asked about pricing and availability, but the rep wasn’t allowed to say anything for one disappointing reason – they don’t even know if they’ll be bringing the Galaxy Player out in the United States. For now, the only region they’ll be looking at is Korea. I imagine they’re trying to gauge market interest before they go for a full-scale launch, ala the Galaxy S. Take a look at the quick video above for a more in-depth look, and hopefully we’ll learn more as spring makes its way to the front of our calendars.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Wouldn’t the iTouch tell Samsung that there is a market for it? ME WANT!

  2. no amoled? and i see you havent yet cut your nails..

  3. I read somewhere that the price in Korea, converted to US dollars, was about $230, assuming that is correct, they mean more like “if there is a market for something that isn’t an iPod Touch, but costs the same.”

I think if anybody wants to seriously challenge Apple for PMPs, they’ll need to be able to seriously undercut them, pricewise.

  4. I’d get one for my kids.

  5. Perfect, another piece of shit device from Samsung that we can all waste our money on!!!

This device is a total joke, because its not a dual-core phone, its not stock Android, the camera totally sucks, and its a galazy s device, which has to wait two decades to be updated to the next version of Android!!!

Wow, such a hard decision as to wether this will be a top seller!!!

  6. Sorry, meant to say “…not a dual-core device…” instead of “phone”.

  7. Reminds me of the Ipodtouch WITH an expandable sd card.

  9. I think I saw that someone on Samsung had said that it was going to be released in West Europe on some website.

  10. Another day, another Samsung post by Quentyn. Its as automatic as the sun rising and setting.

  11. The Galaxy Player sell everywhere except US. Finally PMP not owned and controlled by US company. The US crApple iPod is soon dead.

  12. Also can use torrented music on it. Android spells freedom.

  13. Now this comes out with 2.2, but us 10 million that bought Galaxy S phones cant get 2.2 (officially)… Samsung you scalawags!!

  14. Where’s the home button?

  15. i will not buy nothing without a big f**** AMOLED screen!!!

  16. if it has better sounding card than the ipt4, more frequent updates, lots of ads with hipsters, than it just might be a good rival for the ipt4

  17. I want this sooo very badly but it might not evem come out in the united states? Come on! Apple needs some competition and this is it! Btw this was sent from my older sisters optimus t from tmobile….and im only a twelve year old girl!
