BIC Lighter App Gives Concert Fans Flames Without Fluid
| by Rob Jackson on March 4th, 2010 |
Whether you’re at a Michael Jackson kumbaya fest singing “We Are The World” while swaying back and forth with your lighter up or rocking out to a heavy metal moshfest heading banging with your lighter in the air, BIC has just launched an app for Android that allows you to do so in your full geek glory.

From their press release:
“BIC continues the tradition of being there with the free BIC Concert Lighter application for Apple® iPhone®, Apple® iPod touch®, Google Android™ devices, and BlackBerry® Storm™,” said Mark Funderburk, associate brand manager – Lighters, BIC Consumer Products USA. “Users can virtually experience BIC’s authentic flick sound and select their favorite lighter design to use on the phone. There is even a unique concert mode feature that lets you zoom-to-flame providing a big realistic flame to hold high above the crowd.”
I didn’t realize there was an “authentic flick sound” for BIC… I wonder if they’ll make like Harley (and Apple) and try to patent the sound? Go ahead Ben Harper fans… burn one down without burning anything at all.

By the way… In 2000, after 6 years of litigation, Harley suspended their attempts to patent the “exhaust” sound.

Do you post every mundane app that you download to the android news stream? Would you mind, uh, not doing that?
3. Rob Jackson wrote on March 4, 2010
@r.e. – actually I’m trying to fill the site with mundane stuff so that when something only half-mundane is posted, it is received with the full glory and attention of an actual newsworthy article. Please forward all mundane matters to the “TIP US” page and we’ll post them immediately.
Thank you behalf of,

There is an empty Apps tab on the website for stuff like this. It would be great to be able to list all these reviews in there.

Am I the only person who is offended by people who use their cell phones for this stuff?
I think that the cell phone should never replace the lighter.

This is truly a milestone for the Android market.
It’s only a matter of time now before we catch up with iPhone’s App store in number of useless apps.
By the way, can anyone recommend some good fart noise apps?

Tried lighting my victory cigar with it, but didn’t seem to work. oh well

I had this app months ago – it’s not new :P
Still quite cool though, especially the way the flame tilts with the phone

When are you guys going to fill in the content in the apps tab. How about some reviews, or maybe a top 10 list.

This is crap, I downloaded it months ago and it’s a big slow piece of crap.
Yes the flame tilts, but in a jerky cheapass way that seems to be a changing to 1 of three angled animated gifs. Bleh.
Apps like this could be lightning fast but Bic chose for a cheap development company that could produce this thing within 2 hours.

@craig: I don’t smoke. I don’t carry a lighter.

@craig – definitely with you on that, this is a travesty!!! hahahaha, @r.e. why so pissy guy? lol…

This app has been out for at least a year. It used to be a Zippo lighter with a freaking long splash screen. Then Bic bought the app from the dev and changed it to a Bic lighter. I refuse to update on those grounds. I’d rather have a Zippo then a Bic any day of the week.

I don’t recognize that phone in the ad. What’s it suppose to be? The next Apple iPhone?
Cool that the flame tips with the phone. You can make your stoner buddies trip out on that one.

No complaints on the 18 year-old requirement that you must agree to every time you start the app?

The iLightr app is a lot nicer and more realistic than this one, it is not free however.
