Earlier this year, Xiaomi released their latest flagship phone, the Xiaomi 12. The company was rumored to follow up with another variant called the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, but that clearly has not happened yet. In fact, as it turns out, the phone has been cancelled.
This is according to the company’s CEO Lei Jun who was asked by fans what would be the difference between the upcoming Xiaomi 12S and the 12 Ultra, to which he replied by saying that the company had initially planned to launch the 12 Ultra, but ultimately decided against it and cancelled their plans for the phone. According to Lei Jun:
“The Mi 12 Ultra is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, which was originally planned to be released in March and April but was canceled. In pursuit of a better experience, we upgraded the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC. Qualcomm and Leica have been improving the camera and software for months, and then we’ll get a better experience with the 12S Ultra.”
For those unfamiliar, Xiaomi started to tease the launch of the Xiaomi 12S quite recently. The phones would be unveiled on the 4th of July and based on Lei Jun’s comments, the phones will be equipped with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets. It is also expected that the phones will continue to see Xiaomi and Leica’s camera partnership.
What’s also pretty exciting is that recently, it was revealed that Sony launched their first true 1-inch camera sensor for smartphones and that one of the first devices to use this brand new sensor would be the Xiaomi 12S series.
