Dell Gets Even Crazier With Their Latest Roadmap, Now Featuring the Sparta and Athens

11

As I sit here typing this, I can’t help but wonder what’s gotten into Dell recently: at one point, everyone was ready to count them out of the mobile phone and devices game for good. To everyone’s surprise, though, they’ve bounced back with unbelievable velocity and they aren’t showing any signs of slowing down.

AndroidCentral dug up more Dell goodies for us to drill more info (or speculation) out of. A pair of netbooks – something we’d expect to see from Dell given their traditional laptop background – have cropped up this time around, though. Named the Athens and the Sparta, these netbooks are Dell’s first attempt at the Android game in this light.

As far as the Athens goes, it’s an 11-inch netbook that swivels, has bluetooth, 3G, and WiFi for your data and connectivity needs, and has an ARM processor. The Sparta, on the other hand, seems to be the same thing except Dell classifies it as a “netbook tablet”,  which we’ll assume has a touchscreen, as well.

The most interesting thing about this roadmap is that the Moblin logo also appears for the “medium” and “XL” categories. We could see Dell offering multiple configurations of these same devices, but we don’t care about those other configurations, of course: we only want all the ‘droid we can handle. By the end of 2011, we should see Dell stocking a nice assortment of Android devices. Will you be there to help thrust them into the mobile game like they’ve been longing to do?

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. I commend Dell. If you want to be a major force in a market that you didn’t create, you can’t go and make half hearted efforts. You have to bring something big and better then what’s on the market. Otherwise, you become a “and you are….” They do have some sweet products coming down the pipeline.

  2. Gerard Butler needs to be the new Dell Guy! Seriously, Make it happen!!! :D

  3. Aweeeeeeesome! THIS IS SPARTA! nah fuck that we athenians will kick your arse! but wait it says dell streak won’t be available till Quarter 2 of 2011 according to this road map.

  4. 4th qtr 2011 for the Thunder? A little late isn’t it? That’s like the Xperia X10, a little late to the game to matter no? Seems to me like there is a lot that can happen with other manufacturers that already have strong competing handsets now in that time period!

  5. By 2011 all these devices will be outdated.

  6. Though this roadmap shows moblin its far more likely that it would be meego, created by merging moblin and maemo, and frankly that looks like a better fit for larger form factors anyway

  7. ZDR35H,
Agreed. I think they will be pulling a Sony Ericson on this one showing up a little late to the party.

  8. I think companies have to learn that if they want to grab some market share they’ll have to put their products out much faster. With the speed of advancing technology by the time Dell releases their android phone (Q4 of 2011) those phones will no longer look so hot and will be quite lame. I think they should get the hint from Garmin-Asus and their “Way way way too late Nuvifone G60”

  9. An 11″ tablet that’s only XGA resolution? I guess if it’s sub $300 then that’ll be fine. Gemini specs still look better though.

  10. One thing to note is that Dell’s fiscal year ends Jan 29, so they are already in Fiscal 2011… May 2011 is the start of Dell’s Fiscal 2011, Q2.

Which means the Streak should be launching next month according to this roadmap.

  11. This is fiscal year 2011 not the physical year 2011…these devices will come out in 2010 and beginning 2011
