Google name-drops “Android M” during Philippine Android One launch

OK, so the first time we thought we heard about Android “M” it really turned out to be a big misunderstanding, but the name has popped up yet again. Philippine press was treated to the launch of Android One today, and it brought a handful of affordable phones that ship with Android 5.1 Lollipop (which Google still has yet to comment on, but mostly seems to be a big bug fixer more than anything else).

Multiple outlets attending the event spoke with Google representatives at a Q&A session, and one rep suggested that Android One phones would be among the first to be treated to the platform’s latest updates. The rep even went as far saying “Android M” would be among those updates.

Unfortunately that’s all we know, and it’s quite obvious the next major update for Android will start with the letter “M.” What isn’t obvious is what its full name will be, what features it will bring and when it’ll be ready for public consumption, but Google’s willingness to begin talking about it suggests they’re hard at work and have likely made significant progress. In the meantime, I think most of us are still waiting for Android 5.0 Lollipop so we’ll worry about that before looking too far ahead.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Google + down for anyone else?

    sorry for being off-topic

    1. Most of my google services are down. Search isn’t working maps

    2. Working fine for me here

  2. Android marshmellow! And hopefully I’ll be next year otherwise not all OEMS will be able to catch up

    1. I will go with that “Marshmellow”.. all in the same line Lollipop, Marshmellow, junks!!! I do not mean it with respect to android. But the actual candy!!!

      1. Guys, it is MarshmAllow, not MarshmEllow.

        1. I think you need to mellow out, dude…

    1. I’m still trying to determine the difference between a muffin and a cupcake. When you start adding chocolate chips, the lines kind of blur.

      1. Well when I want a cupcake, I’m not thinking bran or fiber.

      2. The difference is frosting in place of the muffintop.

    2. Muffintop

  3. The possibility that something we dont know what it is, may be launched? INCREDIBLE

  4. Mmmmmm…M&M’s

    1. I would think that if they were going to continue the cross licensing of the names as they did with KitKat, they wouldn’t have used something as generic as lollipop for L. Also keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be candy. It can be any dessert/sweet item.

However, if they go with a brand, there’s no shortage of “M” candies:

Mars, Mounds. Mr. Goodbar, Milky Way, Mike & Ike, Milk Duds, etc.

      1. Really random but relevant fact: Mr. Goodbar is a brand name of window security bars as well.

      2. Milo will do also

  5. Marshmallow

  6. Macaroon – Three Stacked on top of each other all different colors with Android Arms and Legs + Antenna. Sitting proudly in front of Google HQ.

  7. This is news?

  8. Lollipop isn’t on 2% of Android’s phones and they are already talking about “M”? Premature is an understatement. Love Android but it might be a good idea to allow people to experience L before M is talked about. Most everyone knew “M” would eventually come. We also know “N” will be after that. But again, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

  9. Why do those phones have so much bezel? That’s my only question. It’s like on par with the original Nexus 7.
