We’ve been seeing quite a few leaks lately pointing to the very real possibility that LG will be opting for a QHD “2K” display in the upcoming LG G3. Last week, a screen shot from the device showed us, not only a new minimal, “flatter” user interface, but it was the second time we were presented with alleged screenshots captured in — you guessed it — 1440 × 2560 resolution.
If you needed further confirmation that LG will be kicking off the 2K spec arms race, Ubergizmo has allegedly received the first photo of the device pictured in the wild (well, a portion of it anyway). The picture, taken of the device just after it finished an AnTuTu benchmark to completion, lists off a few of the device’s specs, including its 1440 x 2560 resolution display (although the reported 640 dpi could be an AnTuTu glitch). What’s more is LG was reportedly able to confirm the resolution of the device to UberGiz.
Last week, we saw the a possible LG G3 variant for Sprint pop up in a user agent profile (LG LS990). While the device listed a Snapdragon 800 processor, it’s entirely possible it was prototype device for network testing and LG will ultimately pop in an 801 in time for its consumer release.
Oh heck yeah let the hypebeasting commence. I cant to see what LG brings to the table this time around.
I have a Feeling this phone will poop all over the s5 and the m8 at the same time
If it’s 5.5 inches or higher, then it’s in Galaxy Note territory and not competing directly with the S5. Meaning, those of us who want a phone and not a phablet will have no interest in it.
which in that case I will happily opt for the G2.
Unless they shrink the bezels even more and make the device thin enough for it to be 5.5 inches and still manageable. The g2 has already some pretty slim bezels, looks like that’s the direction LG is taking
you do realize that a 5.5″ screen cant fit in a 5″ chassis right..
It will be a newer phone with better hardware, the same thing can be said about any smartphone released 3-5 months after the g3. Newer tech is always more advanced.
Still can’t beat the M8 front facing speakers and build quality, or the S5’s AMOLED and water resistance. Well, unless LG throws everyone a curveball and makes it IP67.
Like the aforementioned phones, camera quality is always a mixed bag (especially in LG devices).
I just plate with the M8 and GS5 at T-Mobile… I will say that I was wrong about the M8…that bezel.. does not really bother…….
I played with it too on att and you’re right it doesn’t bother me one bit
Good points Chris, one could also argue that the camera wouldprobably be much better on the g3 than the m8 and if the g2 battery is any indication of how good it’ll be on the g3 then there is a chance the battery might be better than the m8 and maybe even the s5.
We definitely will see. It will be the first
I really do not care about a higher density display, I have the G2 and I cannot see any pixels or anything it is a beautiful display… Really if they are sticking with the same cpu/gpu or even the 801 which is the same gpu they are just asking it to work harder for no reason..
Yea I would rather have the higher frame rate. High density displays are just bragging rights at this point.
Higher frame rate and increased color gamut. Most people don’t realize that color itself is a type of resolution, each color has a number, or bit, that it can be created at. Increase the bits, you get higher resolution color, which would result in a more lifelike image than increasing the pixels on a 5 inch phone.
Yeah, quality not pixel density.. The G2 screen is fantastic in all of these aspects though.
The original LG Optimus G which was their flagship phone and had the same specs as the Nexus 4 is still stuck on 4.1.2. Hardware specs and build quality are only half the equation. LG needs to step up their software game.
Okay, I’ll be that guy…. Development for the Verizon version anyway is really good. I’ve been on 4.4.2 for months and there’s few bugs in any ROM I’ve run. Plus, rooting is quite easy for an LG.
I just can’t decide. This phone appears to be great but what about S5 IP67 and that amazing ultra low power mode? I can’t upgrade until another 3 months so maybe I should hold out for Note 4? HTC One M8?
I’m laying back for the unveiling of an apparent GS5 Active and the Moto X+1 that are being rumored by @evleaks on Twitter.
what’s the point of a gs5 active if the gs5 is already waterproof?
That’s why I’m laying back for the announcement. Could they not add even more ruggedness to it? Perhaps take the Active name and make it more “premium” over the standard GS5? Who knows. Waiting isn’t that big of a deal.
Any idea when the G3 will be officially announced???
Omgomgomgomgomgomgomg
I’m sorry, I know that’s what screen makers are calling it, but shouldn’t
2K resolution be 2K pixels in height, same as 1080p is 1080 pixels in
the shortest dimension? 1440 x 2560 should be called 1.4K resolution, or
1440p. Anything else is just cheating. Don’t encourage them!
According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2K_%28resolution%29), QHD is 2560×1440 and 2K is horizontal resolution on the order of 2000 pixels. So Full HD (1920×1080) is 2K as is Digital Cinema 2K (2048 × 1080). So LG calling it QHD “2K” is nonsense.
Also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_display_resolution – the number of standards is mind boggling. If it had been up to me the main aspect ratio for displays especially TVs would have been 2:1 and there would have been a simple progression by 4 in total pixels: 1024×512, 2048×1024, 4096×2048 (stop there). 2:1 is great for movies and would have worked well enough for other TV content too. With respect to computers, everything is simpler in powers of 2.

For the love of god, Phandroid, stop calling 2560×1440 2K.
