uno and friends

We’ve been patiently awaiting the launch of Gameloft’s take on Uno, and that day has finally arrived. The game studio has released UNO and Friends for Android. The game carries an initial price tag of $0, but you’ll be throttled on a token-based freemium model. The more you want to play, the more you’ll have to pay. The game delivers a classic UNO experience either against bots or against your friends and family (hence the name).

You can use unique gameplay modifiers like boosts and super boosts to give yourself an advantage over your opponents, and you’ll be able to use different backgrounds, card deck designs, and special effects (some of which you’ll have to pay for with coin packs). Users can earn more tokens and coins by playing a daily scratch-off game, competing in leaderboard challenges, earning achievements and doing things like connecting your Facebook profile to your account.

Of course, those willing to buy Tokens can get them as cheap as $2 for 20 tokens or $100 for 1,500. Coin packs are $2 for 470 coins up to $100 for 35,000. If that particular money grab wasn’t enough, the game also features ads, and users have the option of disabling those for an extra $3. This is freemium, folks, and as long as gamers tell developers they don’t want to pay for mobile games they’ll be subject to these tactics for a long time coming. The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. F Gameloft

  2. Just went to toys r us last night and bought a deck if UNO cards.

  3. would rather they just charge a few dollars and give me the game in its entirety minus the ads.

    wont be downloading.

    1. That already exists from them. There is a paid version it’s just not “with friends.”

      1. The with friends makes it much more fun, I get to play multiplayer with 3 other people real time with this version. The other one was only local multiplayer right? I would happily buy this game as if if it didn’t have tokens, but it is fun even with them so far so I will play till I run out lol..

  4. Uhm… I already have this game from months back, guess I won’t update since I’ve never needed to buy tokens to play and I don’t have any adds.

  5. That is a horrible freemium model. Like WTF!? More like try for free.

  6. “free(mium)” Lovely. I hate this price model. When will game makers brave it up and sell a game with ONE price? Real Racing 3 was the biggest disappointment due to this price model. I would have gladly paid $9.99-$14.99 for a full game like RR2.

    1. I hate Ouya for pushing even more of this stuff. No, Julie. We want a console that anyone can develop for but we also want to see real games.

    2. I think they are doing this to counter piracy, but they end up alienating the people who actually used to buy their apps, and the pirates are not the ones who will put money into these types of games… In the end, it’s lose lose for them. Not a good business strategy.

      1. Your absolutely right on both accounts, it is meant to counter piracy but it’s upsetting many paying customers. Many of use know it’s not a good way to sell games but how much longer before a major game developer steps forward to agree with the rest of us?

  7. Yeah, not a fan of this model, my soon to be ex wife spent almost $500 in just over two months buying bingo tokens and what not for other games… She didn’t do it out of spite, just didn’t think how quickly $5 and $10 charges here and there add up.. I refuse to go this way or download play any game that limits me. in fact it’s jaded me so much, I don’t download a lot of free games because I fear they will be pay to play and don’t even bother trying them out.. Since most pay to play tend to leave that part out in their description… Sssoooo imho, these fremium jerks are ruining it for the ones that were happy to receive ad revenues. As mentioned, charge me one time fee of $5 and I am good to go… Shrug
