Among the plethora of Wordle knockoffs that have appeared in the aftermath of its success the previous year, there are a few genuine standouts. There is Nerdle, which asks you to correctly estimate a mathematical equation. Squwordle is a wordle based on Pokemon. Worldle, which appears to be a typo but is actually a challenge in which you must identify a country through its shape; and, on the really difficult end, Quordle.
On a single large grid, Quordle challenges you to concurrently answer four Wordles. Each choice you make is linked to all four, making it impossible to multitask even with nine guesses. It’s an experience seeing people play the game on Twitch or other streaming services when the rules haven’t been fully explained to you. It just looks like witchcraft to me.
However, it is obvious that Merriam-Webster believes it has a promising future. Quordle has been acquired by the firm, which is most known for its US dictionary, via its Twitter account. In order to show off the recent addition, the game’s url has already been modified, and Merriam-Webster has officially welcomed it to its extensive lineup of word games and quizzes.
We’re in the same boat as you if you weren’t aware that a dictionary firm owned a series of word puzzles and quizzes. But on their website, you can spend some time indulging in games like Name That Thing, Spell It, What’s That From?, and What Are You Wearing? So it shouldn’t be too surprising that there is another name to add to the list of games that are already in the company’s repertoire.
It’s safe to say that Quordle is not the only word game of its kind to become popular. Naturally, the New York Times purchased Wordle at the beginning of last year for a fee “in the low seven figures,” but Spotify purchased Heardle (Wordle but with music) last summer. Since there is an abundance of Wordle-like clones out there on various topics, what are your favorites? Do you like Quordle and its counterparts? Are you a word game fan at all? What are the types of games that you play daily? Let me know in the comments section below.
