While companies like Samsung were busy launching phones with foldable displays, LG tried to be different by creating displays that could be rolled up and unrolled when needed. The company was on the cusp of launching a smartphone with a rollable display before they called it quits on the smartphone industry.
We speculated that Samsung could pick up where they left off, especially since both companies are pretty close rivals, and sure enough they did. During the Intel Innovation Keynote 2022, Samsung Display took to the stage where they unveiled a 13-inch display that could slide out to become a larger 17-inch display.
The demonstration looked pretty seamless and unlike the foldable display, there is no hinge or any signs of a crease, at least not from what we can tell. Before you get too excited, this isn’t an actual product yet as it is merely a prototype that was presumably created to show off the technology.
According to Samsung, this type of display was created in mind for tablet-like devices, so don’t expect to see it make its way to smartphones anytime soon. All in all, it’s actually pretty cool but at this point in time, there is no mention of when it might actually hit the market, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
