Samsung’s digital car key can now unlock more cars, but only if you live in South Korea

With phones sporting NFC technology, it has opened the door to more uses and one of those uses is unlocking a car door using nothing but your smartphone. This is a very useful feature since it means one less item to bring around with you (although you might be in trouble if you lose your phone).

Now, Samsung has their own digital car key feature which initially only supported the Genesis GV60 car, but we have some good and bad news for you. In a recent update, Samsung has expanded support for its digital car key where it will now play nicely with more car brands and models, which includes:

  • Genesis GV60, Genesis G90
  • BMW 1~8, BMW X5~X7, BMW iX3, BMW iX, BMW i4
  • Kia Niro

Keep in mind that for Genesis vehicles, it will support UWB and NFC, while the BMW and Kia cars only support NFC. For the most part it shouldn’t be too much of a difference. Also, the feature is only supported by Samsung’s newer and higher-end phones. We’re talking about the Galaxy S21 series and later, the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

The bad news is that unfortunately, for now it appears that the digital car key feature is only limited to users living in South Korea. We expect that Samsung should eventually expand support to more markets in the future, but until then, it looks like those of us not living in South Korea won’t be able to take advantage of it.
