Xiaomi’s Black Shark 2 spotted on Geekbench with 12GB of RAM

Earlier this year Xiaomi essentially confirmed that the company is working on a second-gen Black Shark gaming smartphone. They did not mention when the phone would be launched, how much it could cost, or what it looks like, although a recent leak suggests that it might not be so different from its predecessor.

Now thanks to a recent sighting on Geekbench, we might have a clue as to what kind of hardware the phone could be packing under its hood. The model spotted on Geekbench is referred to as the “Black Shark AAA” and it confirms some of our previous speculation, such as its chipset of choice where it uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855.

We had also previously speculated that the phone could pack anywhere between 6-8GB of RAM, pretty standard stuff for a flagship, but it turns out we could be wrong as the benchmarks suggest the phone could actually come with 12GB of RAM. It seems a little excessive, but then again gaming devices tend to lean that way anyway.

This is also not the first time that the Black Shark 2 was caught on the benchmarks. Previously another variant of the phone “Blackshark Skywalker” was also spotted with the Snapdragon 855, except that in that case, it came with 8GB of RAM. It is possible that there could be more than one configuration available for purchase, but we’ll have to wait and find out.

As we have said in the past, we’re not sure if gaming smartphones are truly what the industry needs right now, but Xiaomi and other companies such as ASUS seem to be more than happy to push out such handsets.
