Xiaomi has thrown its hat in the arena with the launch of the Mi Mix 3 at MWC 2019. The company has taken the Mi Mix 3 and slapped a Snapdragon 855 processor and 5G modem inside to create the most affordable 5G device currently available.
The Mi Mix 3 5G has the same ceramic body and magnetic slider to house the front-facing camera as we’ve seen previously. The sliding mechanism is one of the methods used to avoid a notch and allows the front-facing camera and sensors to be hidden until the back panel is extended. Apart from the addition of the Qualcomm X50 5G modem, the Mi Mix 3 5G also gets a larger 3,800mAh battery over the Mi Mix 3’s 3,200mAh capacity, but otherwise, it’s exactly the same device with 6GB of RAM with either 64GB or 128GB of internal storage and a 6.39-inch OLED display. The 12MP+12MP telephoto dual rear camera and 24MP+2MP front camera setup is paired with a rear fingerprint scanner and dedicated Google Assistant button.
Xiaomi has partnered with Orange, Sunrise, Three, Telefonica, Tim, and Vodafone for its 5G capability, but doesn’t necessarily guarantee the 5G capability will be ready at launch – just that you’ll be able to purchase the device through these carriers.
The price of the Mi Mix 3 5G is the real story here – costing just €599 (~$679) makes it the most affordable 5G device we’re seen in 2019 so far, and I have a feeling it will keep that title for some time. The device will be available in May through the aforementioned carrier partnerships.
