Huawei CEO promises growth, innovation and ‘diligent commitment to privacy’ for 2019

2018 looked like it would have been a good year for Huawei. There were reports that Huawei was set to officially launch their products stateside with partnerships between them and major US carriers like AT&T and Verizon. However, all of that fell through when the US government expressed concern about how Huawei could potentially spy on them on behalf of the Chinese government.

This led to several governments around the world to announce that they would no longer use Huawei’s telecommunications equipment, and some of their retail partners also stopped carrying their products. Then there was also the incident involving the arrest of the company’s CFO. With all that has happened, it appears that Huawei is remaining optimistic about their future and going into 2019.

In a letter written by Richard Yu, the CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, he highlights some of the plans of the company moving forward. This includes focusing on research and development in areas like 5G, AI, and the Internet of Things. He also talks about how Huawei’s research has allowed them to expand beyond just phones and telecom equipment, and how its AI has been used to help deaf children learn to read.

It also seems that Yu took this opportunity to reassure their customers about how important their privacy is.

“Huawei is committed to consumer data privacy and fully complies with all laws and regulations of each country in which we do business worldwide. Huawei complies with GAPP principles for privacy protection – the most stringent privacy technology framework in the world – and all requirements set forth in the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).”

It might be too early to tell what will 2019 hold for Huawei, so we’ll have to wait and see if Yu’s optimism will hold true, or if 2019 could really be the beginning of the end.
