Carl Pei is tweeting up a storm about headphone jacks on the OnePlus 5, and we’re scared

Carl Pei decided to start his Monday off with a OnePlus 5 joke, but little did he know what he thought was a harmless quip about headphone jacks would be turned into a PR nightmare.

The joke was “Why did the headphone jack cross the road?” Naturally, we’re assuming he’s referring to the headphone jack on the OnePlus 5, which we still have yet to see in any solid capacity.

Many respondents early on thought Carl Pei was alluding to a change that would move the headphone jack on the OnePlus 5 from the bottom to the top (it was absent on the bottom of the phone in a recent leak), because the answer to that ageless joke is “to get to the other side.” That would be totally acceptable and not heart attack-inducing at all.

But Pei later caught wind of an outlet reporting that the headphone jack on the OnePlus 5 is likely safe, an interpretation that he now seems worried about with a self-realization that he needs to be more careful when he Tweets.

Now, both Tweets are decidedly cryptic and we’re not sure whether to think Carl Pei is grooming us for disappointment or simply dumbfounded that his seemingly harmless Tweet is causing so much panic. We’re hoping it’s not the latter, because if the head of OnePlus doesn’t understand why the removal of the headphone jack would stir up a ruckus then we’re going to fear for many other quirks that may sour the OnePlus 5’s worth.
