Step aside Iron Man, HTC’s new spokesperson is a baseball player

HTC hasn’t had much luck with big marketing campaigns. They tried going big and weird with Robert Downey Jr. a.k.a. Iron Man and Hipster Troll Carwash. Then they went with a more mellow approach with Gary Oldman begging you to “ask the internet.” So far not much has really helped to turn things around, but their hoping their new “North American Ambassador” will do the trick.

HTC has announced a new partnership with Robinson Cano of the Seattle Mariners (formerly of the New York Yankees). The partnership was apparently “born out of a shared dedication to the pursuit of personal excellence.” Cano had this to say:

“HTC is a natural fit for me because they always want to be the best at what they do. Their products are great for me because I’m always on the road and I need my phone to work as hard as I do.”

But how long will it be until we see “via Twitter for iPhone”?

Expect to see Cano start showing up at HTC events, in commercials, and much more. Will this latest celebrity help HTC sell more phones? Only time will tell, but we’re skeptical. Robinson Cano doesn’t have the mass appeal of RDJ or Oldman. We wish HTC nothing but the best.
