Final Fantasy 6 coming to Android — first trailer hits YouTube [VIDEO]

24

Square Enix is bringing another 16-bit classic to our beloved platform soon, with the game developer revealing that Final Fantasy 6 will be making its way to Android sometime soon. The first trailer for the new-age port has gone up on YouTube, giving us a glimpse at the game with improved sprites. It’s familiar, yet fresh, and gives us a nostalgic high that not many other games could.

Square Enix says this thing is headed to us this winter, though it looks like we’ll be waiting until the new year to see it rolled out. We’ll also probably have to wait a big longer than our Japanese counterparts will.

If Square Enix’s previous launches are anything to go by, you’ll probably be paying more than $10 or $15 for the privilege of playing. If that doesn’t scare you off, though, you should get your affairs in order and prepare to lose hours of your life playing this. Watch the trailer above, and if you want to check out the previous releases be sure to catch them on sale for up to 50% off.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  2. Sweet. Although I wish they would have revamped the graphics as they have on previous titles.

    1. Stinks for sure, but this is the one I’ve been waiting for. FFIII in the US as I remember. I’ve got a feeling that I will be picking up this one.

    2. I think they hold up really well though. I prefer the hand drawn art to the mediocre primitive looking 3d models from some of the remakes.

    3. The initial screenshots I saw from FFVI mobile were indeed “revamped;” it’s possible that the graininess of the video hides this fact, but it’s also possible that they got lazy. Initially the plan was to make it look similar to FFV on mobile.

Here are some of the shots I’m talking about: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130215-Square-Enix-Releases-First-Final-Fantasy-VI-Mobile-Screens

  3. I realize that’s a re-streamed stream, but I really don’t see any graphical improvement there.

Are there actual, official screenshots for comparison?

  4. FINALLY! FF6&7 FTW

    1. this has been available for years with emulators- I dont know why people are so excited

      1. For me, emulators are really only great if you connect a controller. (Which I am happy to do at home but I’m not going to carry around my PS3 controller for any time I want to play a game.) Their touch screen controls are perfect for a great and convenient gaming experience.

  5. “improved sprites”

We’ll take your word for it since the video sure doesn’t show it.

  6. One of the best Final Fantasy’s and RPGs ever.

  7. Disappointed they didn’t give it the 3D treatment

  8. The video quality is bad enough that I can’t distinguish it from the original.

  9. I wish Square didn’t charge so much for games almost 2 decades old.

  10. Square should probably work on developing a new FF that doesn’t blow instead of rehashing old ones. Yeah, this one is prob my favorite of the series, but $15? I’d rather buy a 12pk.

  12. are you serious, people?

What do you expect this should cost? $5?

This game provides dozens of hours of entertainment with tons of animation, story, and music.

We are paying less now then we did 15 years ago for games. An SNES title from ’94 costed about $50 retail! And you had to go to the store, see if it was there, be bummed when it was sold out and try again later. Or drop down your $50 and be happy for many many weeks or if your really into it, years.

Here is a nice comparison of some console’s game’s cost with inflation:

Year System (USD Launch Year Price) (USD 2010 Inflation Price)

    1986 NES ($30-$50) ($60-$100)
    1991 SNES ($50-$60) ($80-$100)
    1996 N64 ($50) ($70)
    2000 PS2 ($50) ($65)
    2000 Xbox 360 ($50) ($65)

Now they offer this title with newer images, new game engine, new controls, on a different platform, possibly with new music, quests, special characters, items, Espers, magic, locations, cut scenes, ext… for a mere $15.

So according with inflation if it was 1994 we would actually be paying about $8-9 for this title.

So people. If you want it, BUY IT! Go to the store, get a Google Play card and buy it.

    1. Your logic is flawed. Back then, you could resell those games to recoup some of your money. As a matter of fact, with this game in particular, you could potentially profit from it’s resale.

You can’t resell these DRM-ridden apps. The company has no cost of production. They do some minor “revamping” and once they’ve finished the product it doesn’t cost them any more to sell 10 copies or 1 million copies if they’re digital apps.

I love FF games, but when Mega Man 9 or Mega Man 10 came out for digital download, I believe they were $10, and that’s a brand new game constructed from start to finish, not an old game being reworked for a new device. (That being said, oddly enough, their mobile iterations of Mega Man games have had pretty poor reception, in all fairness)

Just illustrating that they could charge half as much or 25% as much and they would sell more copies so they would actually make more money.

  13. awesome that they finally bought this to us.

if you don’t have enough in your piggy bank to get this just wait a while for it to go on sale.

  14. the trailer is STILL not watchable. I can’t see it. Still waiting for a watchable quality of it.

  15. Oh God… I hope they didn’t F up my favorite Final Fantasy, and possibly, my favorite RPG of all time.
