Acer announces phone that can record 4K video, a 24-inch AIO, and a new 10-inch tablet

Acer has announced a trio of products which bring a nice bit of diversity to the company’s device portfolio. For starters, we’ve gotten a new phone — Liquid S2 — that Acer hopes will change their luck in the smartphone game.

It’s a 6-inch full HD display smartphone with 2GB of RAM and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 quad-core chipset clocked at 2.2GHz. Other specs of the S2 will include a 13 megapixel OIS camera, a 2 megapixel front camera, a 3,300mAh battery, 4G LTE and more. The device’s unique claim to fame is its ability to record full 4K video (in addition to 60FPS full-HD video recording).

The Liquid S2 will come with Android 4.2.2 and Acer’s custom bits sitting on top, which include Acer’s “Float” UI, Acer Docs, Acer Remote Files, and more. This UI allows you to bring up bite-sized applications such as a calculator or notes on top of whatever you’re doing. Acer says to look out for it this October, but has yet to settle up on a price.

A ton of work has gone into the camera software, with things like Quick First Shot allowing you to take photos from the lock-screen, or “Favorite Mode” which will give you up to 5 profiles that can hold different exposure and quality settings.

Moving on, Acer has also introduced a new 10-inch tablet, dubbed the Iconia A3. The device sports a 1280 x 800 display and a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor, in flavors of either 16GB or 32GB.

It’s made to be a budget device, of course, so the starting price tags of €249 for WiFi-only and €299 for 3G definitely seem fitting. Europe, the Middle East and Africa will be seeing this thing starting in October (though the 3G version won’t be out until a month after that).

Finally, Acer is bringing us a 24-inch All-in-One PC that just happens to be running Android. Acer shoved NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 chipset inside. The device’s MHL support also allows it to double as a monitor, with folks being able to hook up any Windows 8 PC and use it as a touch-enabled display. That’s not too shabby for €429. The Acer DA241HL is said to be coming in mid-October, as well.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. this phone should satisfy all the spec whores…

    1. huh? did someone call me

      1. You spec slut. ;)

  2. is the screen gonna be 4k HD or allow 4k playback… if not. you’re gonna be able to record stunning videos and have to buy a 8 thousand dollar tv to watch it on. now if the screen had 4k hd screen… MY GAWD!

    1. Well, if you bought an $8000 TV you now have the perfect phone.

      1. Exactly since nothing is being broadcasted in 4k or a 4k blu-ray player(?)… that i know of at least

      2. Your phone would be the only thing compatible with your TV until the price goes down.

      3. sony 55 inch 4k fell in price to $4k lol

    2. Seiki does 4k at 39inch and 50 inches for less then $1500. 39 goes for about $700 and the 50incher for about $1200 and they have more models coming so no need to

  3. Full 4K? But is the screen of the phone also 4K to actually see the video you recorded? If so, then that’s gonna eat the battery up very quickly. But if not, I don’t own any screen that’s 4K (the price is too damn high), so it would be useless…

    1. Unless Key Lime Pie comes also available for Desktop PC’s and Intel CPU’s for PC’s – like Microsoft is doing with Windows 8.

      1. edit: Kit Kat :)

    2. think about it this way, how about you have a 4k video ready to view later with a 4k tv? Would you rather not have a 4k video recorded for future playbacks? Its like asking me 5 years ago if I want to record at 1080p or 240p. Even if I couldn’t view it at native resolution, i’d pick 1080 because as you know tech progresses fast.

      1. 4K isn’t ready for phones just yet. With the current battery and storage technology in our phones, having 4K video will take up a lot of space, and recording it will take up a lot of battery. And honestly, I don’t see the price of 4K TV’s coming down until another 1-2 years.
The specs also doesn’t include at what fps we can record 4K at, suggesting that it is probably 30 fps or less. That calls for high quality, yet choppy video recording. Not something I look forward to when watching the video in the future when I can actually buy a 4K TV.

Although it’s nifty that this phone can record at 4K, the technology isn’t quite there yet, and very few are able to take advantage of that resolution.

    3. @DavidVarghese:disqus Phone doesn’t have to support that screen resolution just because the camera has a high video recording resolution… HTC’s Rezound records in 1080 but only has a 720 screen. Maybe they are going for ‘future-proofing’ but I don’t see 4K being hugely adopted at a mass consumer level for some time.

  4. Do you guys need help? Lately there’s been no articles being cranked out ?

and 16 G of internal storage. But it has SD

  6. Interesting choice for then to go with Tegra 3 for the chipset on that all in one PC.

Kind of an old processor now.

    1. There are phones that sell for $199 by Google with a more powerful chip s4 pro! Lol.

  7. on-screen nav on tablet but not on phone?

  8. For everyone that is asking yes it does have mico SD card slot ;)
I’m gonna be honest….I’m really impressed with Acer.. And that’s saying alot from me. :p

  9. I also don’t care about the 4k but recording 1080p in 60fps that I like a lot let’s hope the cameras good….

  10. 6″ still being a smartphone? where we gonna stop? That’s to big, to me that’s a freaking tablet!

    1. There are some that beg to differ. I’ve seen someone manipulate a Galaxy Note 2 with one hand. I was like WTF!?

  11. Hmmm… *Scatches chin*…

  12. stopped reading as soon as I saw “…6 inches…” Are manufacturers out uf their F*CKING mind?! That’s not a martphone anymore. Stop the bullsh*t and start doing interesting, not annoying things, PLEASE!

  13. What makes it an All-In-One PC if it’s running Android? From what was stated, it’s nothing more than a 24 Inch tablet.

And even then, if you wanted to use Windows on it, you would have to use it as a monitor. This means you’d need an actual tower.

Did I miss something? Am I not understanding what an AIO PC is?

  14. This will fail, note 3 rumored to have 4k recording too.
