LG has no plans to release a G2 Google Play edition

LG-G2-2

As much as we were hoping LG would create a Google Play edition of the LG G2, some unfortunate news is threatening that dream. The Korean manufacturer has confirmed that it has no plans to create a Google Play edition LG G2. That doesn’t mean that plans can’t suddenly sprout up in the future, but there’s nothing in the works for the time being. That word comes to us from representative Ken Hong.

Some might take this news to mean LG might instead be focusing on another Nexus handset, but even that seems to be quite dead right now. If you don’t remember, LG once denied that they were making the next Nexus phone. Of course, denials mean nothing in a world of secrecy, but that’s all we have to go on until more substantial information comes to light.

The G2 appears to be a great phone and folks the world over would love nothing more than to be able to get similar hardware with stock Android and Nexus-like update speed. For now, though, we’ll just have to settle for LG’s factory offering and hope folks in the development community can get the goods up and running on this thing once it’s available to the public.

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. …because they’ll just release the Nexus 5 instead? Fine by me.

      1. LIES!!!!

      2. I would think a vendor would try to sell their own phone first before selling a Nexus version of their phone to make more money that way.

      3. Although I believe you Quentyn.. nothing is official til it’s official as you know. But..

Example: “LG says it isn’t making a Nexus 5”

Ok.. but who says it’s going to be called the Nexus 5?

        *Dum dum duuuuuum!!!*

        1. Touche, my fair friend.

        2. I remember when Google said there would be no Nexus 2 then came out with “we never said there’d be no Nexus S!” so you may be right

    1. My thoughts exactly.

  2. HTC said there would be no Google Play edition of the One.

  3. Too bad, so sad. Guess I’ll just have to wait for another Snapdragon 800 based device. I’m sure that there will be plenty of options on the market soon (perhaps Nexus 5?). Ain’t no way in hell I’d want to deal with that software mess that is LG’s custom skin. Gizmodo got it right in saying that while the hardware looks great, the software is a bloody mess. The only way this phone could be good would be with clean, stock Android. Even then, I still have a really bad taste in my mouth from my experience with the G2x. It looked stock, but the firmware was/is a horrible P.O.S.

    1. God, I hope not. Hopefully Google has learned it’s lesson and will not be offering up any more Nexus devices with Qualcomm hardware. We’ve seen the problems this causes enough times now to know better.

      1. What are you talking about? What problems?

  4. Didn’t LG make some statement days after the whole “we aren’t going to make another Nexus comment” and state that there was a mistranslation. The claimed he actually said they didn’t need to make another nexus device. Here is an article on it -> http://www.androidcentral.com/lg-vp-comments-nexus-5-misinterpreted. Seems strange to put out a comment about it if they really didn’t want to stay in the nexus game.

    1. They said that they didnt need to make another nexus! Not that they wouldnt. I even think in that article they said they would be willing to work with google on another nexus but that they didnt think their company needed to make 1.

  5. LG Nexus 5 Confirmed.

    1. right, forget the google play editions, just give us the nexus 5!

    2. Where?

    3. will there be a Nexus 5 Google Edition?
      O.o

      1. Whats a nexus 5 google edition? Nexus is Google!!!

        1. So you’re saying theres a chance?

        2. Captain Obvious is obvious!

      2. Google Phone Nexus Version Google Play Edition 5

    4. Yes please. With normal buttons.

  6. This probably confirms LG will be making the new nexus….which is unfortunate i still would rather see someone else get a shot of it as i wasnt to impressed with the n4

    1. I don’t know man. Nexus 4 impressed me so much more than any previous nexus. Top of the line processor, ram, and resolution. I passed on the galaxy nexus because by the time it came to sprint the hardware was just too ancient.

    2. And what about n4 didn’t impress you? No sdcard and no LTE was Google’s choice, not LG’s. Hardware wise Nexus 4 is amazing.

  7. It would be nice if this was the hardware base for the Nexus 5. Give us the 32 GB version for $400 or less.

  8. Someone please explain to me what you hate about the lg software… I have used sony samsung and htc’s ui and lg’s is my favorite by far it is close to stock quick and super customizable.

    1. i was surprised to see that the soft key were customizeable.

    2. I think I saw that you could make the area around the soft keys white, which is pretty neat.

    3. Fanboys can’t find anything to hate on this phone so they use the generic rant about software even though they haven’t seen it in person and even though they can change every bit of LG’s customization.

  9. So what’s the likelihood that the bootloader can be cracked open or at least someone on XDA can hack this phone to get root?

  10. So what! My Nexus 4 is still AWESOME! That is if you discount the battery life, but that is almost all phones….

    1. discount camera too.

    2. *Not on the Note II

  11. I plan on putting Nova Launcher on mine anyway

  12. This as the nexus 5 or Sony but based on the Z (water resistant) not water proof with a big emphersis on camera we have already heard rumbles of the next nexus is about the camera i got told by a Sony rep they are doing nexus but did he think I mrnt play edition ? Both 5″ too

  13. Didn’t HTC say the same thing about the HTC One? I thought I read that somewhere…
