Sony Mobile to cut 15 percent of global workforce, 1,000 jobs in jeopardy

6

In the name of streamlining and increased profits, Sony will cut 15 percent of their global workforce, or about 1,000 jobs. The company is specifically looking to reduce its presence in Sweden , with the majority of reductions focusing on their phone plant in Lund. The cuts come less than a year after Sony completed the buyout of mobile operations from once partner Ericsson and signal the beginning of the mobile maker’s shift towards operating the business out of Tokyo. The process of downsizing, which also includes consultants located in Sweden, should be completed by March 2014. Remaining operations in Lund will focus on software development.

  1. I don’t get Sony. They design very nice looking phones but they always come out with dated specs and software.

    1. Maybe because they don’t want to compete with their vita

      1. So they let everyone else compete with it without trying to gain some share of the pie? Not the best plan.

  2. This is what phone makers need to do to stay in the game. Moto and Sony are both making moves to streamline operations and focus on fewer and better products. Although it sucks to those that lost their jobs, it’s nice to companies being proactive.

  3. I’d love to buy Sony hardware if their specs weren’t last generation’s. Maybe if they brought out a Nexus they would change this, or more likely not
