0

Google has introduced an AI summary feature in Google Docs, aimed at helping users quickly grasp the key points of lengthy documents. Powered by Gemini, this tool generates a concise overview that can be inserted and edited collaboratively.

Google Docs has been expanding its building blocks feature set, which includes tools like task trackers and contact lists. The latest addition, the AI summary feature, provides users with a way to generate a document overview by navigating to Insert > Building Blocks > AI Summary or typing “@” followed by “AI summary”. The summary can be refreshed to reflect document updates.

For users dealing with content-heavy documents, the AI summary feature could save time by offering a quick recap instead of manually skimming through pages. This is particularly beneficial for meeting notes, technical reports, strategy documents, marketing briefs, and project plans

While AI-generated summaries may not always capture nuances perfectly, they can serve as a useful starting point for refining content.

The feature started rolling out on March 17, 2025, and should be available to all users by April 7, 2025. It is accessible to Google Workspace customers on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google One AI Premium, and those with Gemini Education or Business add-ons. Since there are no admin controls, users can access it immediately.

This update brings another layer of AI assistance to Google Docs, but as with any AI-generated content, users may need to verify accuracy before relying on summaries entirely.
