Swype Beta Update Brings Dragon Dictation and 50 Languages

29

The folks at Swype have released a new beta for users to try out. The latest update brings Dragon Dictation support giving them a nice TTS input option over the default Android TTS option (which isn’t bad, but we like options).

It currently supports English, French, Italian, German and Spanish and more will be added over the coarse of 2012 Users can also download 50 different languages from within the settings menu of the app. They’re also adding another new feature called Advanced Language Modeling, but I’ll let them explain it for you:

Advanced Language Modeling
Swype now features an improved language modeling algorithm, designed to increase the accuracy of the suggestions we offer (such as knowing that you mean “mosh pit” instead of “mosh pot”). By analyzing the text you’ve already entered, Swype will offer more accurate predictions that make sense in the context of the sentence

  • Up to a 40% increase in prediction accuracy when a language profile is present
  • Learns over time as you use it, building up a personal language profile for you.
  • Enabled only for English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. Other languages coming soon!

Users can go to the Swype Connect section of the settings menu in Swype and check for the update by hitting the refresh button. If nothing comes up, their server probably bounced you due to too many people trying to download it. If that’s the case, just download it later. The team advises users to wait 72 hours before reporting issues with grabbing the beta update. [Swype via Android Central]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Does this work on ICS?

  2. Is it Android 4.0 compatible ?

    1. The previous version was — despite Phandroid’s article a few days ago claiming that it wasn’t (unless it was GNex-720p-only incompat) — so I don’t see why not.

My “Downloading Swype…” update progress bar hasn’t budged a tick in 5 minutes.

      1. ya same here. I then had to change my battery now the update isnt within settings
When I go to the swype installer it says their server is down!
        Assclowns.

    2. not yet. they are still working on it IIRC

  3. Screw Dragon Dictation, Google Voice Actions work just great.
    We want ICS support.

    1. As much as I cant stand Nuance DD is much much more accurate than Google.

    2. Problem is….none of the VTT is supporting Norwegian :(

  4. Isn’t TTS=Text To Speech, which is the opposite of voice input?

    1. yes, it’s actually supposed to be VtT as they say it at swype.

    2. Indeed.

  5. I don’t see a Swype Connect section…

  6. Nexus love?

  7. I use to use swype until I discovered swiftkey and now swiftkey x… swype is really good, but swiftkey x works a lot better for me

    1. ya but the swyping motion is pretty nice once it’s working properly. if swype could learn & predict the way swiftkeyx does, it’d be unstoppable

  8. The new Swype update is working just fine on my Nexus S with ICS 4.0.3 so it does work with ICS….

  9. hahaha welcome to the world of Nuance software.  They are a shitty and shady company and now surprise surprise the servers are down.
I had to call their tech support for my Dragon dictation PC software.  Their tech support agent obviously came to work sick because no joke he must’ve snorted at least 3 times during the call.  He didn’t skip a beat though.  He went on as if it was okay to snort up his snot while talking to a customer. It was fantastic!!
Once you use one of their products they spam the shit out your inbox. they basically make overpriced software.I constantly get pop-ups from Nuance telling me I have an update to my software yet all it is is an ad for one of their other products.
One of the few companies where I would gladly download their software illegally and feel good about it. I guess the creators of Swype don’t give to shits about their product and sold-out to a shitty company.

    1. Cheese with your whine?  Seriously, let it go.

  10. “down for maintenance”. Ok Nuance everyone in the room knows it’s not maintenance it’s just that you didn’t plan this very well but you want to call it maintenance!!!
LOL gotta love a shady company.
At least the creators of Swype got a lot of cheddar when they sold out.
Nothing worse than someone who creates such a great product and then reveal their true self by selling out to a crappy company

  11. Oops. We Swyped too soon.
BETA DELAYED BECAUSE:a) We forgot to buy vowelsb) Our beta build server crashedc) Upper management kept accelerating the beta scheduled) All of above !#@$!&”

These guys are clowns. I would expect this from 2 guys smoking weed hoping to be in a rock band but not from software developers.

  12. Looks like they pulled the update.  I was trying to download it, and it kinda sat there and did nothing.  When I rebooted my phone the update was gone.  I went to their website to find this message.
Oops. We Swyped too soon.BETA DELAYED

    1. It’s because Nuance is a shit company

  13. Did anyone else think of Elder Scrolls when they read this title? :)

  14. Love the update, been using it since last night.  Everything just seems a tad bit faster and smoother, even the voice

  15. How is this different from FlexT9?  That is nuance’s original swype like keyboard with dragon dictation.

    1. I just learned yesterday that FlexT9 is Shapewriter reincarnate.  I couldn’t send them 4.99 fast enough.  And I am so happy to have it on my GNex!  Beautfiful, wonderful, perfect.

Personally, I am glad Swype wasn’t available for GNex out of the gate, or else I wouldn’t have found out FlexT9 is the successor to my favorite, discontinued keyboard program:  Shapewriter.

  16. Tried (again) to download Swype for my Nexus…I get an error saying my screen size isn’t supported. Please update, I’m a real pecker without it! :-)

  17. Like the update….no problems and it does seem faster..inc 2……wish the language button wasn’t there though

  18. Can I update Swype to get these Beta upgrades if it came preinstalled? If so, how?
