HTC: Thunderbolt Getting Gingerbread in Q3 2011… Because We Missed Q2 2011

19

Well, an HTC representative has confirmed that the HTC Thunderbolt will be getting Gingerbread this quarter. Doesn’t tell us much, folks, because before they said it’d be getting the Gingerbread man last quarter. And it’s very possible they could miss this new window, as well. Bottom line, Gingerbread’s coming but don’t hold your breath on a pinpointed date until you see that OTA notification smiling right back at you. [Droid-Life]

The "Google Phone" sounded too awesome to pass up, so I bought a G1. The rest is history. And yes, I know my name isn't Wilson.

  1. Desire wins again

  2. And then it will be q4 once they miss q3 just like they did with q2

    1. by then the vigor will be out and they will drop the tbolt completely

  3. I had no idea that my dream phone, after that phone would have incredibly slow updates rolling out for it. Sounds like that dream phone I wanted and wished I had gotten something else, AFTER that phone.

  4. i got tired of waiting. cyanogenmod 7.1 rc1.4 on the thunderbolt is way way better than what verizon/htc had on there. way more stable and way more features. now i have 2.3.5.

  5. Oh my goodness. Bravo, Verizon. Now I’m even happier I rooted and flashed a Gingerbread ROM.

  6. Typical. They advertise the crap out of this phone then drop it like a hot potato after we get one. Meanwhile all of their newer phones pass on by with the new updates. How can they have so much trouble with an update. It’s not like they are designing a whole new operating system from scratch for the phone.

    1. GINGERBREAD IS NOT THE MAIN PROBLEM. IT IS THE CONSTANT LOSS OF DATA. EVERYONE I SPEAK WITH HAS TO DO BATTERY PULLS. YOU GO FROM 4G TO 3G THEN 1X AND THEN NO NETWORK. THIS STINKS. I WORK FOR VERIZON AND THE COMPANY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF IT SELF. GINGERBREAD HAD HONEYCOMB ARE MADE BY GOOGLE. SO IF HONEYCOMB IS A MORE ADVANCED UPDATE. WHY NOT SKIP GINGERBREAD AND GIVE US THE HONEYCOMB WITH ALL THE FIXES. I JUST DONT GET IT.

  7. I’m sick of these announcements that go nowhere. I’d rather them say nothing and just release it. I really wish I had never bought the Thunderbolt in the first place. Supposedly the best thing out there but has the worst support. Maybe Apple getting a ban on HTC phone sales here is a good thing.

  8. Yea HTc is not the best with updates at least moto still supports in a timely fashion

  9. HTC ARE A FAILURE with Updates now. What used to be, The King of updates goes to Sammy now. This is just unacceptable.
Even their Galaxy S I from last summer is already on Gingerbread months ago and they have 2.3.4 now with gTalk video chat.

  10. I had gingerbread on my phone over a month ago

  11. So much for the phone after my dream phone seeing as my dream phone would already have gb(maybe even ice cream sandwich)

  12. I rooted my thunderbolt and I’m running BAMF 3.0 4.9. Sense 3.0 is great. That still doesn’t change the fact that the leaked rom has minor issues. As soon as HTC releases an official version, we will get better roms without bugs. Which is why we should all care about HTC’s releasing new software in a timely fashion.

    1. I’ve run dasBAMFSense3.0rc4.9, it’s a good ROM. If you know how to tweak code, you can get rid of the bugs. To be fair, even ‘official’ ROMs have their issues. For example; Gingerbread is up to 2.3.5 on some devices and Google didn’t make all of those builds because they were bored. What may work perfectly on one phone may not work nearly as well on an identical phone. But, yeah, I suppose an official build could help smooth the road for the public ROM coders.

      1. are any of you losing data icons. i am on my 2nd thunderbolt and am in nj and keep going from 4g to 3g then 1x and no network. this stinks. happing on both phones. i also spoke with other users and they are also doing battery pulls to get the sim chip to relocate towers.

  13. The Thunderbolt doesn’t have Gingerbread already?! Huh, I don’t usually notice these things because I’ve been running Sense 3.0 for quite awhile, and GB even longer. I rarely pay attention to when “official” updates are released. Sort of like I never knew that Angry Birds had ads until I played it on someone else’s device (I did buy the paid versions, however; I support the devs of apps that I like).
The sad thing is that I would’ve looked forward to the Bionic, but if it doesn’t get 2nd-init or if Motorola decrypts the bootloaders (not holding my breath), I’ll be running ICS loooong before the Bionic sees it. Damn shame. OG DROIDs will have ICS to some degree long before some of the phones being released in the next few months will.
That said, I would like to see Motorola to actually keep their word about the bootloaders ala Atrix. I have zero problem voiding my warranty for an unlocked/non-encrypted phone. I wonder how many other people are serious about it as well or if they were just whining because other people were.

  14. Been running GB with sense 3.0 for a bit over a month and a half. SynergyROM ftw.

  15. HTC – are you listening or want to become the next RIM by not giving basic stuff that customer want ??? I guess this would my first and last TB/HTC.. really moving to the Samsung S2 if TB does not get updates before S2 finally comes out…

    Baah from a new customer…
