Motorola Atrix 4G Webtop Hacked to Work with Any HDMI Connection

20

The industrious folks over at XDA have done it again. User Fenny has modified the APK files necessary to run the Motorola Atrix 4G’s Webtop functionality to enable the feature over any HDMI connection. Goodbye pricey docks. You will need to have your Atrix 4G rooted and deodoxed for this to work, but if that’s the case you need only update the DockProvider, DockService, and PortalApp APKs to enable Webtop as an option whenever the Atrix is connected to a screen via HDMI.

Sure, it isn’t quite the convenience of a compact laptop dock featuring keyboard and screen built in, but if you have a bluetooth keyboard and an HDMI-capable display you can enjoy the enhanced capabilities of Webtop without spending an additional penny. More instructions at the source link below.

  2. I thought it already did that. Good to hear that it is done regardless.

  3. Does the Xoom have Webtop? If so, can you get Webtop on the Xoom?

  4. I believe Webtop is specific to Motoblur. Unless you install a custom rom on the Zoom I don’t see it happening.

  5. very nice, i look forward to this if I decide to get the bionic if it uses a dock as well.

  6. Nifty, Slightly off topic… I hope someone comes out with docks that are just screens and keyboards for cheaper then this things.

  9. @Zagh: Can’t do a DMCA on this one… well, they could, but will lose out on appeal. What they will do is offer a “mandatory security update” that makes your taller, more muscular and cures male pattern baldness that will be OTA to all the handsets.

  10. Nice…

  11. I wonder if it’d be possible to make this work with other phones with HDMI, too.

  12. See iPeople, this is what OPENness is about.

  13. Wait.. you have to be deoxed?(probably spelled it wrong) wouldn’t you need to be bootstrapped to do this? Is there a bootstrap for this already?

  14. I’m all for stuff like this..

    but,

no longer have to buy crazy expensive dock for phone…

    Anticipated next step from Motorola:

No longer have option to unlock bootloader and make it harder to root etc..

    ahh

    sigh..

  15. @Guardian452com- iPhone 2G got updates to 2.x and 3.x, iphone 3g to 3.x and 4.x, iphone 3gs to 3.x and 4.x, see droids thats how you do updates even if gimped a little

  16. Wtf is dan talking about? What does apples update schedule have to do.with this?

  17. Isn’t HDMI universal? I got my Atrix and didn’t try it with our other HDMI cable yet.

  18. @InspectorGadget80: HDMI is a standard that has “approved devices” that are allowed to work with. Seems like Moto is making Webtop only see their docks as approved devices.

  19. i m surprised that we can’t enabled Webtop over any hdmi connection since the videos on citrix community site (talking about atrix and citrix) shows it is able to do so. see 2nd and 3rd video at:

  20. Guys….I don’t understand any of this! My question is…I have a EVO 4g. I love it, but its small. Is there anything out there I can dock to so that I have a larger screen and keyboard. I have wi- do hotspot capability. I just can’t afford a laptop. Any help?
